2. STUDENTS ON THE MARCH: THE CASES OF MEXICO AND COLOMBIA.

Abstract

This paper sets forth suggestions as to the types of variables which are significant for interpreting the direct action undertaken by students in Mexico and Colombia in order to influence affairs in their universities and on the larger political scene. It is hypothesized that student behavior may be partly explained by inconsistencies between the image of the "student role' on the one hand, and actual experience in attempting to realize that image, both at the university and after graduation. Hypotheses are also set forth as to why, when student direct action is taken, it is not strenuously opposed by university authorities, public officials, or the public generally. Abstract

The article presents information on the contributors to the articles of this issue. Some of them are presented. Author Rafael Nieto, former Governor of the state of San Luis Potosi and Secretary of the Treasury, is now Mexican Minister to Sweden. He is an authority on economics and finance. Author Anita Brenner is a writer now living in Mexico City. Author Jose Vasconcelos, the well-known Mexican scholar, until recently Secretary of Education in the Mexican Cabinet, has now been elected Governor of the Mexican state of Oaxaca.
