This paper reports on the development of a methodology to measure the outcome of consumer participation through content analysis of consumer advisory board minutes, the consolidation of observations so derived into generic categories, and the weighting of generic categories by expert judges. The weights are then applied to the observations of a particular board generating three distinct outcome measures. The methodology was developed as an alternative approach to case studies of consumer participation that appear in the literature and as an attempt to give the phenomena some empirical shape and structure. In order to evaluate more effectively the impact of hospitalization on the post-hospital social adjustment of state hospital patina the Worcester Scale of Social Competence was administered to 159 psychiatric patients subsequent to hospitalization and one year following discharge. Analysis of pre- to post-hospitalization change scores revealed significant sex differences, particularly with regard to role orientation and adequacy with which leisure time was utilized. A shift in life style from a somewhat physically active, outwardly oriented role to one characterized by passivity and an inwardly oriented role was noted for both sexes, but was more prominent in male ex-patients. The article presents information on the identifying behaviors of the social work client which are signs of his will and ability to work productively on his problem and are the dynamics social workers seek to influence in order to effect movement and change. In their diagnostic thinking social workers have sought to ascertain the treatment potentials within the client himself, the agency and the social environment in order to anticipate outcome, in part, but chiefly in order to utilize those potentials of treatment ability in the surest and most economical ways. However, the focus is more upon the nature of the problem — the physical, psychological, or social sickness — than upon that to which it was joined. Social workers have been more knowledgeable about the dynamics of pathology in a person or in his situation than about the dynamics of the whole person and situation of which the sickness was only one part. To be sure, in their diagnostic work social workers have set down orderly accounting of "assets" alongside "liabilities" or "ego strengths" alongside "ego weaknesses."

The article presents information on longitudinal assessment of intellectual functioning following unilateral temporal lobectomy. The direction and extent of intellectual change were investigated longitudinally following unilateral temp oral lobectomy for poorly controlled temporal lobe seizures. A battery of psychological tests including the Wechsler scales, Porteus Maze test, and Graham-Kendall Memory-For-Designs Test was administered preoperatively and again at approximately one and three year intervals postoperatively. No significant test score alterations were observed following left temporal lobectorny. More clearcut changes emerged after right temporal lobectomy with consistent scale reductions on the Picture Arrangement subtest of the Wechsler scales at one year.
