Fiber battings are becoming increasingly important for their uses as insulation. This paper reports the results of an investigation of the influence of thickness, applied pressure, bulk density and fiber type on insulation parameters such as Clo and Warmth Factor. The specific Clo value of 3.4 Clo per inch for battings falls between specific Clo values for fabrics and fabric-foam laminates. Warmth Factor, for a given batting weight, increased with thickness; and for a given thickness level, decreased with weight. Neither fiber type, within the limited range investigated, nor batting density had a significant influence on the intrinsic insulation of the battings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While it is generally the bonder's responsibility to insure the performance of his bond, it is accepted fact that various finishes applied to fabric prior to bonding can substantially affect bonding strength. An account is given of a simple laboratory-type mangle, developed for laminating textile fabrics with foam material. It is shown that it is possible to obtain with this equipment laminates with negligible loss of thickness in the lamination process and with a bond of satisfactory strength. It is also shown that, when a few of the laminates were given a waterproof finish with polyurethane resin on the same equipment, a satisfactory degree of waterproofness was imparted to them with the simultaneous retention of some of their inherent water-vapour-transmitting capacity. The resistance of foam, fabrics, and laminates to the transmission of water vapour is evaluated in terms of the equivalent thickness of still air for purposes of comparison, and the measurement of the thermal-insulation values of the foam, fabrics, and laminates with a simplified hot-plate apparatus is described. The flexural strength of amalgam specimens was increased significantly by the application of ductile metal laminates in regions that are subjected to tensile forces and perpendicular to the direction of the applied force. Laminates were silver-tin alloy, pure gold, pure silver, and silver-plated stainless steel. The embedded stainless steel laminate in a thickness of 0.0015 inches was the most effective. The ability to dye and finish bonded fabrics in the same way as unbonded fabrics would be of great advantage to many mills. In the early days of bonding such post dyeing was very limited, being attempted only as a last resort. Now, however, by properly designing the bonding system, bonded fabrics can be post dyed almost routinely. Differential shrinkage of fabrics in dyeing is no longer an insurmountable problem if care is taken to choose the proper combination of fabrics in advance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
