This paper reports a project intended to make a preliminary objective assessment of the needs of prospective participants in a continuing education program. The article discusses the functional-role activities of the private pediatricians in the United States. The article demonstrates the use of medical students as observers for a time-study of the "typical office day" of 25 general practitioners. It is the first study of its kind whose data include an accurate accounting of the time spent by physicians in each activity, no matter how simple or how complex. The physicians studied spent only 50 per cent of their time in actual diagnosis and treatment of disease. Health education and counseling, a field largely ignored by current medical education, required 17 per cent of the time. Ten per cent of their time was spent in the area of preventive medicine, a subject of minor importance in most schools and even absent from the curriculum of some. Administrative activities, the business and financial side of office practice, a subject far too mundane for the "idealistic image of the physician's role" as current medical educators see it, accounted for 16 per cent of their time.

The article focuses on requirements that students must fulfill in order to gain entrance into medical schools in the U.S. While the best preparations for medicine are not too different from the requirements for intelligent living and an understanding of the interplay of forces of modern society, in practice, only the most apt and most intellectual students are admitted after the minimum training. Intellectual preparations for students include reading and writing skills, mathematical ability, and psychology as tool subjects for comprehension, expression, and self-analysis.

The article examines the causes of student failures in medical schools in the U.S. In 1951, the Medical College of Virginia attempted to find the answers to some of the problems with student failures. Accordingly, the same effort was made through a survey of fifty-eight articles appearing in the Journal of the Association of American Medical Colleges from 1927-1948. Finally, opinion returns from graduate students at the University of Missouri in the summer of 1948, showed students' attitudes concerning failures of professional and graduate students. In the two surveys, the student cannot always be blamed for failure. Instructors may be at fault in the process of instruction itself or in inadequate means of judging what is real failure, or real success.

The article focuses on family planning programs in the U.S. Family planning services in the United States are provided in the context of a medical economy dominated by private practice, and rewards are arranged in such manner that preventive medicine is honored more in theory than made available in practice. The economic structure of American medical practice perpetuates the historic division between curative and preventive medicine, and this division continues to be reflected in the character of medical education and the allocation of professional attention, status and other non-economic resources. While recent legislation has established new methods of financing intended to remedy some deficiencies in medical care for the poor. Their implementation has been limited in scope. Most states, indeed, have not gone beyond payment for curative services. In view of the limitations inherent in the organization of the U.S. medical practice, the very substantial degree of control over fertility achieved by most American couples is evidence more of their strong desire to limit family size than of the effectiveness of health programming. The fertility decline begun a decade earlier continued in 1967.

This study attempts to evaluate the quality of the Catholic medical school and hospital system in the United States. Part I examines the achievement of graduates of, and the research con dusted in. Catholic medical schools; the prestige of Catholic hospitals in their local communities; and the research conducted in the hospitals. The article focuses on the implementation of an Associate Degree Nursing program in a community college. The U.S. favours equal opportunity in education for all and shared responsibility among local, state and federal governments; and furthermore, aid for school construction, salaries and federal scholarships. It seems essential that a fast-growing society should meet the educational needs of its post-high school youth effectively through a program, such as "a public community college," leading to an associate degree.

The article discusses the potential and role of podiatry in community health programs in the U.S. The author emphasized on the education of the podiatrist, his activities in various health programs and related matters. Podiatry is the smallest of the medical profession categories. However, podiatric education has reacted sharply to societal needs, bringing new emphasis to present health problems. The health system is faced with the necessity for providing both quality and quantity care at a time when trained medical manpower is in short supply.

The American Dermatological Association met at Boca, Florida from March 19-24, 2004. His remarks were centered on the history and future trends of dermatologic training and practice in the U.S. Dermatology is now represented in the principal agencies overseeing medical speciality training and practice in this country: the Council of Medical Specialty Societies, the Interspecialty Committee of the American Medical Association, the American Board of Medical Specialties, and the Commission on Medical Education. R.C. Freeman of Houston, Texas, showed how phototoxicity could be demonstrated in vitro by monolayer tissue cultures exposed first to a drug for two hours, and then to ultra violet light.

The article comments on the role of the physician in education about sexuality to school aged children of the United States. It cites a survey of school sex education programs, which revealed that in 989 schools with courses, physicians were the major advocates of initiating a program. In 1964 physicians in general practice and in Obstetrics and Gynecology practicing at that time, reported that their own medical education did not prepare them for advising patients on sexual matters. A physician can play a major role in providing sex education to school going children.

According to J. Bonner, the future of botany, the length of its life, its vigor and its dynamism depends upon the way one looks at botanist as a profession and how one define botany. He said that the length of life of botany as a science is not entirely dependent upon botanists, but also in the concepts of administrators within the university system.
