A review of the literature concerning experiments with mixtures is presented. Beginning with the work of Scheffé in 1958, the review covers approximately twenty papers in near chronological order, the last appearing in October 1971. Although priority in the treatment of designs for mixtures is claimed by Quenouille [27], and while others may argue that the work of Claringbold [6] was the impetus for Scheffé's research, the choice of starting with Scheffé is made because most of the authors of the reviewed papers recognized Scheffé as the person most instrumental in pioneering the work which has appeared over the past fourteen years. The article presents a study on the influence of iron and manganese and waterlogging on the growth and distribution of Agrostis stolonifera, Festuca rubra, Carex flacca and Carex nigra. Results showed that in terms of the plants' appearance, there were no visible differences between A. stolonifera and C. flacca in various treatments applied. However, small dark brown spots were observed on some leaves of F. rubra in the manganese treatment. The shoot manganese content of all species, except C. nigra, increased with increasing manganese content of the culture solutions. Also, growth of the Carices was enhanced by increasing the concentration of manganese.

The article discusses a one-year study of the competitive ability of Cynosurus cristatus and its yield in simple mixtures. The experiment was conducted in boxes 16 inch square, located on the roof of the Memorial Building at the University College of North Wales in Bangor. During the study period, the species showed a seedling survival potential of less than 50 percent, poor competitive ability, heavy mortality as a result of heavy defoliation. At a seeding rate of 5 pound/acre the inclusion of Cynosurus cristatus in a simple mixture reduced the incidence of Agrostis tenuis in the seeding year and did not reduce the total yield.

The article focuses on the effect that specific additive agents has on the physical properties of mixtures of zinc oxide and eugenol. It states that a literature review revealed that manufacturing processes for zinc oxide powder and additive agents may improve the setting time and strength of zinc oxide-eugenol cements but damage the cement's solubility and other properties. It examines the effects of ethoxybenzoic acid, fused silica, methyl methacrylate, and other materials on the cement.
