The introduction to this paper discusses the definition of the scope of library and information science and establishes what is included under the term "periodical." The main types of periodicals are considered to be: professional and academic, international, periodicals outside the field and secondary periodicals. The second section considers periodical publishing in librarianship, documentation and archives. Those classes of periodicals which were excluded from discussion are noted and the methods for determining the "core" of periodicals are described. Methods for improving the editing and publishing of periodicals is the subject of the third section and the coverage of professional literature in secondary publications is the topic of section four. This fourth section gives a comparison of: "Library and Information Science Abstracts,""Referativnyj Zhurnal," and "Information Science Abstracts." The final section of this paper consider the promotion of international co-operation between editors of journals. The appendices list periodicals by country, by language and by rough categorization; as well as periodicals outside the field of librarianship and documentation. At this 1972 conference, upper division and graduate students from nine western colleges submitted papers on the theory, history, and criticism of rhetoric. Three of them are published in this conference report, along with the principal address. In "Rhetorical Criticism as Argument," the principal address, Wayne Brockriede suggests that useful rhetorical criticism must function as argument whether that criticism is evaluation, an analysis of a rhetorical transaction, or an attempt to relate the analysis to general concepts or theories. Charles E. Heisler's paper, "The Rhetoric of Yippie: Rubin at Salt Lake," analyzes Jerry Rubin's address at Salt Lake City in February 1970 as a demonstration of the nonverbal, symbolic orientation of the Yippie protest rhetoric. In "The Implications of Phenomenological Hermeneutics for Rhetorical Criticism," Raymond N. Pedersen discusses modern theories of hermeneutics, the study of the general methods of textual explication as applied to rhetorical interpretation and criticism. In his paper, "Reader's Digest Rhetoric: How Sweet It Is," John Worcester analyzes the world view and subjects of the articles that the "Digest" publishes. (RN)

USING DATA FROM A STANFORD UNIVERSITY STUDY IN FRESNO, CALIFORNIA, A MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS WAS MADE OF 25 MEDIA USE AND INFORMATION SEEKING BEHAVIORS. SEVEN SOCIAL-PERSONAL AND THREE PSYCHOLOGICAL VARIABLES WERE ALSO CONSIDERED. YOUNGER ADULTS WERE MOST LIKELY TO PARTICIPATE IN ADULT EDUCATION, ESPECIALLY VOCATIONAL COURSES AND EVENING CLASSES AND USE RADIO FOR MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT. OLDER ADULTS WERE THE ONES MOST LIKELY TO READ "READERS' DIGEST" AND RELY ON RADIO FOR INFORMATION. READING OF FICTION BOOKS AND OF DOMESTIC AND FASHION MAGAZINES (WOMEN), AND PARTICIPATION IN ARTS AND CRAFTS COURSES (MEN) AND LIBERAL ARTS (WOMEN) WERE BEST PREDICTED BY SEX. EDUCATION CORRELATED WITH READING OF BOOKS, NEWS MAGAZINES, AND PERIODICALS IN GENERAL AND WITH RECENT PUBLIC LIBRARY USE. INCOME AND EDUCATION WERE STRONG PREDICTORS OF NEWSPAPER USE. RECEPTIVITY TO NEW EDUCATIONAL MEDIA PREDICTED THE USE OF REFERENCE BOOKS, IMPERSONAL INFORMATION SEEKING, AND INDEPENDENT STUDY. MEMBERSHIP IN ORGANIZATIONS CORRELATED CLOSELY WITH INTERPERSONAL INFORMATION SEEKING, AND THE PERCEPTION OF PRACTICAL INFORMATION IN MEDIA WAS RELATED TO USE OF "LIFE" MAGAZINE, SERIOUS TELEVISION PROGRAMS, AND SPECIFIC INFORMATION SEEKING. ACHIEVEMENT MOTIVATION CORRELATED WITH NONFICTION READING. IMPLICATIONS AND ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES WERE SUGGESTED. INCLUDED ARE 52 TABLES AND FIGURES AND 28 REFERENCES. DISISS (Design of Information Systems in the Social Sciences) is a research project financed by OSTI, which began in January 1971. The objective of the project is to carry out research necessary for the effective design of information systems in the social sciences. The aim of this part of the DISISS project is the application of statistical techniques to citation data in order to group journal titles in the social sciences. Various statistical techniques exist, some with a fairly long history, for grouping items according to observable attributes. Details of these techniques and the selection of one for use with DISISS data are discussed. This report coveres the use of cluster techniques in bibliography, techniques of clustering, an analysis of the pilot study data, progress with data collection and conversion, and work that is required for the future. This bibliography on career education is divided into four sections: (1) selected references on career education, listing key documents focusing on the concept of career education; (2) journal articles, listing various articles from periodicals dealing with the career education concept and some of its components; (3) background references related to career education; and (4) continuing sources of information, giving several information sources which will generate a continual flow of career education in the future. Special instructions for ordering documents from the ERIC collection are included. This bibliography will prove useful to those interested in familiarizing themselves with the career education concept and with new techniques for implementing career education programs. (AG)

A research project is being conducted to construct a mathematical model of the operations of an academic library to be used in making managerial decisions. As part of this project, this report examines Bradford's Law of Scattering and the fall-off of use of documents as they age. A series of mathematical analyses indicate how these two laws can be used together to indicate optimal decisions in the management of collections of journals. These decisions include the number of titles to be taken, the length of time retained, and the choice of binding policies. Imaginary petroleum libraries in various circumstances are used to illustrate the conclusions. (Author/JB)

During the first year of publication of Current Papers in Physics (1966) a joint study was undertaken in the UK by Aslib working under contract with the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE) and in the US by the American Institute of Physics (AIP) to assess the need for the new publication and its usefulness to the physics community. The study was designed in three phases. This report covered the third phase which was conducted after nine months of publication of CPP. 215 physicists in the UK and 393 physicists in the US returned a copy of the October 10, 1966 issue of Current Papers in Physics on which they had indicated items of interest to them. These markings and any additional comments offered by the respondents were analyzed in terms of the physicists' specialties to provide detailed information on the optimum arrangement of CPP to match the fields of interest of the physics community. In addition, the methods in which CPP is used, and the number of requests for abstracts and papers of references in this issue of the publication were recorded. (Author)
