A preoccupation with power, black power, student power, flower power, poor power, "the power structure," is the most striking aspect of the American political scene at the moment. It is never easy to fix the beginnings of a movement, but participants in the emerging welfare recipients movement will probably remember the last days of June, 1966. About forty men and women on relief left Cleveland on the first lap of a 155-mile march to Columbus, there to present complaints about public welfare to Governor Rhodes. As the marchers passed through cities and towns on the route, local recipients, ministers, social workers and other sympathetic citizens, sometimes hundreds of them, fell in line for a short distance. When they finally reached Columbus, the forty marchers were joined by busloads of recipients from all over Ohio. In 1937, a small band of Roman Catholic unionists and labor sympathizers had just formed the first national organization of Catholic workers in the United States. Today, after almost four years of rapid growth, the Association of Catholic Trade Unionists is in the labor movement with all the energy and self-assurance the Roman faith can call up in its adherents, and the organization has taken its place as one of the most considerable of labor's pressure groups. Since its aim is to win all Catholic wage-earners for unionism and all Catholic unionists for the ACTU, labor leaders—some encouraged, some deeply disturbed—are watching it closely.

The C. I. 0. has just suffered one of the most serious defeats of its entire existence. In an election held by the National Labor Relations Board on September 20 it lost Hollywood labor by an overwhelming majority to the American Federation of Labor (A. F. of L). The importance of this election is out of proportion to the number of workers involved. The movie industry is the stronghold of unionism in Los Angeles, and the strategy of the C. I. 0. was to capture the labor movement of Southern California by attacking the A. F. of L. fortress.
