The article presents an alphabetical list of abstracts and titles of abstracts submitted for papers presented at meetings of the American Statistical Association and Biometric Society in Washington D.C., in December 1967. The abstract "Indians and Smudges on the Census Schedule," by Donald S. Akers and Elizabeth A. Larmon, is an explanation of how certain anomalies in the reported characteristics of American Indians in the 1960 Census are to be explained by systematic smudging of the census schedules. The abstract "Input-Output and the Economy," by Clopper Almon explains that input-output and regression analysis were once considered rival tools for analysis of the economy. In those days, the constancy of the coefficients seemed a crucial issue in deciding whether or not to use input-output. Today, thanks to the progress in computer hardware and model building technique, regression analysis and input-output complement one another and the constancy of coefficients need be assumed only where we know of no better assumption.

The 1946 Committee on Contributed Papers of the American Sociological Society, has several suggestions to offer: If sufficient interest is shown in the Section of the contributed papers published in a section of the periodical "American Sociological Review," the section should be continued, since it gives opportunity for younger men and women to appear on the program and become known to the Society. More- over, it stimulates the interest of the younger sociologists in the meetings. This year 20 papers were submitted; last year there were only 8. An opportunity to appear on the program of the Society, together with the possibility of publication in the periodical apparently is desired, as evidenced not only by the number of papers submitted but by the fact that both years every participant, upon the acceptance of his manuscript, has immediately signified his intention of being present to read his paper. It would be well for the Committee to be appointed early enough for it to get well underway in the spring. During the last two years, the Committee has been handicapped by not getting underway until the summer or fall.

The article offers information on the Third Annual Meeting of the Operations Research Society of America held in New York City from June 3 to 4, 1955. The secretary reported on the status of membership in the Society. Several local sections of the Society have been authorized by the Council for the Los Angeles, California area. The article offers information on the American Society of Animal Science which was founded in 1908 as the American Society of Animal Nutrition to improve the quality of investigation in animal nutrition and to promote systematic and correlated study of feeding problems. It states that in 1961, its name was changed to American Society of Animal Science because of the emphasis of interest on the scientific aspects of animal production. It mentions that the Society has attempted to serve its membership through publication of research papers presented at its annual meetings, and "Journal of Animal Science" is its major publication. The article reports that the 1969 Spring Meeting of the American Academy of Periodontology is being held in New Orleans, Louisiana, in May 17-21, 1969. Graduate Student Research Program during this meeting will consist of papers read for the Balint Orban Prize. Balint Orban Prize, including a $ 200 Award from the Academy, will be presented to the author of the best paper, based on Graduate Research. Each participant will be allowed 20 minutes for his presentation. The paper should be approximately 15 minutes long, leaving 5 minutes for open discussion.

Our own Kenneth Boulding, in The Organizational Revolution, profoundly observed the rapid growth of "associations" of one form or another; and with that insight, peculiar to economists, commented on the many factors that accounted for this phenomenon. There were "supply and demand" elements, and all of them contributed to the overall pattern that made for more and more organizations. The American Finance Association is one of these, and is currently a robust thirty years of age--in the prime of life--and the proud parent of its illustrious offspring, The Journal of Finance, now beginning its twenty-fifth volume. Most members, and there are currently more than 5,000 members and subscribers of various categories, are only dimly aware, at best, of the beginnings and evolution of the Association, for no formal history has ever been printed. The article presents updates concerning the Operations Research Society of America as of November 1960. The Lanchester Prize Committee presented its report to the council of the society in May. The Ninth Annual Meeting of the society will take place in Chicago, Illinois from May 25 to 26, 1961. The council of the society took a number of actions about the operation of the society, including an arrangement approved under which the society would receive a grant from the National Science Foundation.

This paper is an analysis of one hundred and one rural locality groups delineated for Wake County, North Carolina, during the summer of 1948. There is a high correlation between the quantitative indexes of four aspects of group life. There is a low correlation between the quantitative indexes and group identification as measured in this study. All four of the indexes have low predictive value of the strength of group identification. However, the index of the number of kinds of institutions and organizations appears to be more highly associated with group identification than the other indexes used in the study. Minority groups differ from one another, among other things, in the extent to which they are integrated into or apart from the societies to which they belong. The extent of this integration or apartness is reflected in the various ways in which the minorities differ from the rest of the population, such as in the effect of economic class upon voting. No minority group is ever completely integrated into its society, for complete integration is tantamount to the extinction of group identity. No minority group is ever completely apart, for the term "minority" implies the existence of a majority with which the minority forms a common society. The dimension of integration-apartness is related to but not identical with the dimension of assimilation. Assimilation refers to the replacement or modification of group characteristics as a consequence of out-group contacts. Integration refers to the extent a minority actually forms a part of the body politic of its society. Thus, German "non-Aryan" Christians were fully assimilated but, in the Third Reich, certainly not integrated into the German society. In general, the term "integration" is applicable at various levels of analysis. We talk of the integration of individuals into groupings, the integration of these groupings into further units, and the integration of these into larger units in turn. In the case of our study, individuals are more or less integrated into their respective minority groups, and these in turn are more or less integrated into their respective societies. We are concerned in this paper with developing a measure for the degree of integration of minority groups into their societies. The basic proposition of this paper is: The more apart a minority group is from its society, the more will it differ from that society as a whole in the effect of economic class upon voting. An analysis of the voting of two minorities in Central Europe illustrates the above proposition. This is followed by comments on minority group voting in the United States and Canada. This article focuses on planning in the United States. Whatever type of planning one has in mind, the context within which planning takes place is critical for its characteristics. In particular, planning under conditions of rapid social transformation is basically different from planning under conditions of stability. The one most important difference between planning under conditions of rapid social transformation and planning under conditions of stability is that when society is passing through rapid transformations, much less can be taken for granted. Planning is a multimeaning term but, at the very least, it implies efforts to shape the future with the help of structured rationality, systematic knowledge, and organized creativity. It constitutes one mode of policy making distinguished by first, a medium-to-long time perspective, and two, much attention to internal consistency between a range of subdecisions. There are many possible planning styles, and the number of available planning modes, methodologies, methods, and tools is very large.

The annual meeting of the Midwest Finance Association was held in April 1969 at the Sherman House in Chicago, Illinois. The Western Finance Association held its fifth annual meeting in August 1969 at California State College at Long Beach. The sixth annual meeting of The Appalachian Finance Association was held in April 1970 in Akron, Ohio.

The article presents the proceedings of the Ohio Valley Sociological Society Council Meeting, Held on Thursday, April 27, 1971, held at the Cleveland-Sheraton Hotel, Cleveland, Ohio. Resolutions concerning deceased members of the Ohio Valley Sociological Society should be published as obituaries in the Sociological Focus. Physician Olmstead reported for the publications committee. He indicated that the publications committee was currently seeking a new editor for Sociological Focus. He also reported on the number of papers submitted in the undergraduate and graduate paper competition. At the undergraduate level the committee has selected two CO. President Useem then introduced the topic of convention development It was moved that the principle of establishing an office of executive secretary, and/or business manager (which would be ad hoc for now) be approved. Such an executive secretary and/or business manager will work on the managerial issues of the society. The resolution was passed. The executive committee will designate an acting executive secretary.

The article presents information on minutes of the Ohio Valley Sociological Society's council meeting which was held on September 20, 1968 at Pick Congress Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. President William D'Antonio called the meeting to order. The minutes of the last council meeting were approved as corrected. There was discussion of the minutes of the executive committee meeting with the officers of the Midwest Sociological Society. There was discussion of the paper competition. The status of the student when the paper is completed will determine which contest it is entered in. This competition may include honors work and special projects as well as papers for courses. The following motion was made and unanimously passed. The editor of Sociological Focus may set up a special account to handle income and the expense of editing the journal. The editor is to give an accounting of this money to the Publications Committee, and this accounting is to be included in the Publications Committee's report to the council. A membership drive will take place utilizing the state chairmen. Reimbursement of mailing costs to the membership committee was authorized.

The article presents the proceedings of the annual business meeting of the Ohio valley sociological society. Don Olmstead reported for the Publications Committee. He reported on the search for a new editor, the maintenance of the publication, Sociological Focus at the University of Akron, and the exploration of future publication possibilities between the OVSS and other societies. Whereas the innovative and sematic scheme of the program produced interesting and provocative papers and discussions. Be it resolved that Chairman Marvin Olson and Program Committee members Elizabeth Mullins, and John Scanzoni be recognized for their efforts and that their universities be so informed. Whereas, the three year term of office for the following officers of the Ohio Valley Sociological Society has expired, be it resolved that the new officers and membership recognize the extraordinary efforts and contributions made by: Shailer Thomas, Secretary; Charles Westie, Treasurer; John Lindquist Editor of Sociological Focus.

The article presents the program for the annual meeting of the Phycological Society of America at the Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona. The meeting will be held from June 16-22, 1974. The chairman of the program is Norma J. Lang. A field trip is scheduled on June 15, 1974. Researchers Dean W. Blinn and Gerald W. Prescott will lead the field trip. All sessions of the program at which contributed papers are presented are joint sessions of the Phycological Society of America and the Phycological Section of the Botanical Society of America.

The article presents information about plans of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) this year. Two items may be of prime interest in this year's council affairs. The highlight of the annual meeting was a paper by George Homans on the relationship between the social sciences and the humanities. It was generally felt that this session did much to create a better understanding between these two sectors of the academic community. The ACLS Committee on the Secondary Schools has commissioned background papers from scholars in each of the disciplines and areas concerned with the teaching of social studies, and the paper on sociology is being written by Gresham Sykes. Grant and fellowship programs of interest to members of the Association are intended primarily to provide uninterrupted free time for scholarly activity. Travel Grants to international congresses and conferences are presently available only for meetings to be held after July 11, 1962. Since the ACLS will rely upon the Association for recommendations for all congresses and conferences which are primarily sociological in nature, inquiries of this nature should be addressed to the executive office.

The dwelling is the arena of most interaction by the family as a group. It is well established that the family has lost some of its traditional functions. The thesis of this paper is that family functions are influenced by the characteristics of the home. Proposals to alleviate problems of inadequate housing among low-income groups of the world fail to consider what functions housing satisfies among various cultures, or within a given society. Descriptions of the "dream home" by rural residents of Georgia, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic are analyzed to determine the functions performed by the house. There are culturally specific differences, but in general, the higher the level of living of a group, the more functions are satisfied within the home. The manipulation of "fixed-feature space" in the form of housing could be considered as a mechanism for giving the family new functions as well as bonds that hold it together. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports on the matricentric family system as it appears in three different societies: the Caribbean, the Nayar of India and Afro-American families in the United States. The author's purpose is to show the variations in female-centered families by studying their nature and functions among different groups in diverse parts of the world. A suggestion for more conceptual clarity of the matricentric family concept is posed in order to provide more theoretical consistency in its further analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper compares the perceptions of county agricultural committee members with those of county extension agents as to general objectives and specific roles of county extension workers in thirty Wisconsin counties. County committee members tend to view the agents more as "generalists" and as persons performing services for groups and associations in the county than do the agents themselves. The ordering of types of activities on the basis of importance in "getting the job done" by committee members tends to agree more with the ordering by agricultural agents than by home agents or 4-H Club agents. County agricultural committee members tend to define the roles of county extension workers in terms of local needs and interests rather than in terms of sectional, state, or national problems. There is general consensus between agents and committee members with respect to their relationships in program planning but not in administrative matters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyzes issues concerning the effectiveness of established firms' entry into industries where it was not previously participated. "Entry" is the subject of much recent discussion, especially the growing recognition that the "entering" firm may be, not a newborn one, but an established firm moving into markets or industries where it has not previously participated. An increasing number of writers are pointing this out. But in revising the traditional conception of the mode of entry, one should also change views about the probable effectiveness of energy in society. Although many of the recent statements mainly imply that entry is much freer and presumably more effective, than was believed while thinking in terms of new-firm entry only, there does not seem to be any explicit analysis of the question as yet. The principal purpose of this paper is to try to approach this problem analytically by outlining what appear to be the major issues concerning the effectiveness of established-firm entry in the American setting and by presenting some of the principal arguments bearing on them.

The program committee appointed by the Council is instructed by it to arrange a program of invited papers suitable for the fiftieth anniversary meetings.
