2. Occupational and Educational Expectations of Northern and Southern Youth: A Preliminary Comparison.
- Author
-
Drabick, Lawrence W.
- Abstract
The paper addresses variations in the occupational and educational expectations of high school seniors from two geographic regions of the U.S. It gives particular emphasis to differences in the proportions with high expectations, to the relationships between those proportions and certain personal-social characteristics of the respondents, to respondents' perception of source of influence on occupational and educational decisions, and to respondents' perception of the attitude of their parents toward those decisions. The basic premise of the paper is that factors associated with geographic residency affect the behaviors and perceptions of residents. The contention is that geographic climatic and terrain imperatives, normative patterns associated with ethnic composition of the population, expectation and perceptual sets developing from occupational and religious characteristics, traditions based on differing historical precedents, and similar factors will be reflected in actual behaviors as well as in attitudinal patterns. The 1970 North Carolina sample consisted of somewhat more than 3,000 respondents; that from North Dakota (1973) was a little more than one-third as large. Comparison of the total sample from each State shows that the proportion of the North Dakota sample with high educational and vocational expectation was slightly higher than in North Carolina. The difference was somewhat greater for vocational expectation, but in each case was sufficiently small that one need not attach much meaning to it. Thus, the differences tend to support the contention regarding influence of socially derived consequences of geographic location. (KM)

The article focuses on the impact of the 900-acre refinery of petroleum company Standard Oil Co. located in Mandan, North Dakota on the refining and marketing operations in the U.S. Upper Midwest. It notes that the opening of the refinery marks a trend in which smaller refineries are serving local markets and making use of crude oil coming from developing sources found in the Williston Basin and Canada. Reasons behind the change in marketing and refining patterns are given, one of which is advances in refining technology.

LAND title registration & transfer ,AGRICULTURE ,FARMERS ,SAVINGS & loan associations - Abstract
This article discusses marketing of agricultural lands in Minnesota and North Dakota. It is the purpose of this paper to review, as briefly as possible and yet considering the more important forms, the methods of transferring land in the Red River Valley of the North, which lies in Minnesota and North Dakota. This area had long been a favorite field for fur-traders, explorers, missionaries, and adventurers. Incoming farmers now rapidly displaced the half-breed Indians who had been the chief occupants, and at this point came the first step in the transition of the land from free to economic goods. Within a few years the title to almost every available acre had passed over to the national government. Methods of transferring landed property in densely populated centers have been considered to some extent, including the significance of building and loan associations and other institutions of like nature or having like purposes in view; but it would seem as if less attention had been given, at least in the U.S., country to a consideration of methods of transferring agricultural lands than to any other phase of the land question.

There is always a certain amount of interest attached to the excursion of a state into the field of industry. This is not confined to the state itself, but usually manifests itself as well in even remotely located sister commonwealths. Because of the publicity given North Dakota's program of state ownership, it was thought that a paper dealing with some of the problems of its major industry would find enough interest to justify it. In order to understand clearly the nature of the organization and management of the state mill and elevator, it is necessary to touch briefly on certain acts of the legislature. In the first section of an act passed by the sixteenth legislative assembly of the State of North Dakota and approved February 25, 1919, is found the statement that "for the purpose of encouraging and promoting agriculture, commerce and industry, the State of North Dakota shall engage in the business of manufacturing and marketing farm products and for that purpose shall establish a system of warehouses, elevators, flour mills, factories, plants, machinery and equipment, owned, controlled and operated by it under the name of the North Dakota Mill and Elevator Association." In addition, this act provided for the manner of operation of the Association and the powers and duties of the persons charged with its management.

The article looks at the reasons for bank failures in the U.S. Northwest as of March 1924, as some banks blame the Federal Reserve System for their incompetence. It claims that the failures are mainly due to poor banking and too many banks, not rigorous deflation. John H. Rich, Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis in Minnesota, notes that, based on the ratio of population per bank for the U.S., North Dakota had five banks instead of one, South Dakota four, and Montana three.

11. Parent Reaction to Educational Innovation in North Dakota: A Theoretical Perspective and an Empirical Assessment.

Patton, Michael Quinn
- Abstract
Parental reaction to open education in North Dakota was studied. The hypotheses predicted that there would be less parental acceptance of and support for the open classroom according to: the greater the classroom openness; the less the parents' cosmopoliteness, the smaller the town population, the older the parents, the lower the informational level about the innovation, the less parental involvement with and experience in open classrooms, the less the degree children are perceived as being happy with school; the less parents perceive their children as progressing in school, and the greater the perceived home discipline problems. Data were based on interviews with 276 parents with children in open classrooms during the 1971-72 school year in 16 communities. Interviews obtained data on the parents' (1) factual knowledge about the classroom, (2) reactions to the classrooms attitudinally; (3) perceptions of how the classroom may have affected their child's home behavior, (4) information about and perceptions of open education and the children, and (5) personal information. Both closed, multiple choice items and short-answer, open-ended questions were used. Results of a stepwise multiple regression analysis were presented, with preference for more detailed, nonparametric statistical analyses. Findings indicated that the child's perceived progress, town size, child's comparative enthusiasm for school, parent observed classroom, parent classroom participation, and changes in home discipline problems were first on the stepwise process. The article focuses on the use of lignite deposits as fuel to produce cheap power in North Dakota. The state's recoverable lignite reserves are equal to 165 billion tons of bituminous. Studies have been conducted by Vern E. Alden Co. to assess the cost of producing power under specified conditions. The company figured that a private firm would need 120 million U.S. dollars in capital for an aluminum processing plant that burns 4,920,000 tons of lignite. Lignite is said to be a source of tars and light oils that could be removed by carbonization.

Six months is the longest one may live in Montana without making the decision whether one is "for the Company" or "against the Company." Even some members of that ever-growing stream of automobile pilgrims which enters our hot sage-brush plains from North Dakota's prairies and threads its way westward through the irrigated valley of the Yellowstone are frequently to be found enlisted in one camp or the other before they have zigzagged down from some pass over the Rockies and crept along a narrow ledge above a roaring stream through the canyon into Idaho. The all-pervading and unrelenting nature of the struggle admits of no neutrals. Since the territory's admission to statehood in 1889 the struggle has continued.

This represents the results of a rural research project in a Plains state, the particular state being North Dakota. The object of the investigation was to discover if a permanent submerged socioeconomic class of employable unemployed farmers was being formed in the towns, especially county seats, of the various counties. Contacts were made with those closest to the situation in 40 of the 53 counties between the middle of April and August 10, 1939. Practically all the information gathered in the localities affirmed the formation of a permanent submerged class. Facts from the national situation and from international conditions stein to support the conclusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
A RESEARCH REPORT WITH GENERAL APPEAL TO CLASSROOM TEACHERS SERVED AS THE BASIS FOR AN ATTITUDE EVALUATION SURVEY COMPARING THE COMPREHENSION OF RESEARCH BY TEACHERS AND BY EDUCATIONAL RESEARCHERS. MAJOR GOALS OF THE STUDY WERE TO DETERMINE AREAS OF RESEARCH PROCEDURES AND TERMINOLOGY WHERE TEACHERS MOST NEED ASSISTANCE AND TO DEVELOP PROCEDURES FOR DISSEMINATING RESEARCH RESULTS TO TEACHERS IN A FORM UNDERSTANDABLE TO THEM. RESPONSES FROM 167 SMALL TOWN AND RURAL TEACHERS WERE COMPARED WITH RESPONSES FROM 151 MEMBERS OF THE AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION (AERA). QUESTIONNAIRE ITEMS REFERRED TO METHODS OF SAMPLING AND DATA GATHERING, RELIABILITY, VALIDITY, AND DATA ANALYSIS. AERA MEMBERS WERE MORE INCLINED TO INDICATE THAT THERE WAS "INSUFFICIENT INFORMATION" UPON WHICH TO BASE A RESPONSE. TEACHERS WERE MORE INCLINED NOT TO RESPOND TO CERTAIN ITEMS. ON ALL QUESTIONS THERE WAS A HIGHER PERCENTAGE OF EDUCATORS RESPONDING "DO NOT UNDERSTAND." CHI SQUARE FINDINGS FOR THE 41 QUESTIONNAIRE ITEMS INDICATED THAT THERE WERE STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES BETWEEN EDUCATORS AND RESEARCHERS IN ATTITUDES TOWARD AND COMPREHENSION OF VARIOUS RESEARCH PROCEDURES AND TERMINOLOGY. DIFFERENCES WERE ALSO DETERMINED BETWEEN EDUCATORS WHEN GROUPED BY SEX, POSITION, EXPERIENCE, DEGREE, AND SIZE OF SCHOOL ENROLLMENT. THIS PAPER WAS PRESENTED AT THE AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION MEETING (NEW YORK, FEBRUARY 17, 1967). (JK)

The article says that returns of the Independent Voters' Association initiative measures, intended to restrict and denature the farmers' industrial program are being compiled in North Dakota. The most important of them calls for the liquidation of the Bank of North Dakota, the most promising and to date the most successful part of the North Dakota experiment. If carried, a new State department will take over the rural credit functions of the State bank, but the rest of the bank will be closed. The Independents promised to give the State mill and the terminal elevator projects of the State a fair trial, but one of the important initiative measures cuts down the amount of bonds that can be issued and the amount of capital that can be invested in these experiments.

The article presents information on the Senator Gerald P. Nye. When Nye, senior Senator from North Dakota, goes before the voters in the Republican primary on June 27, 1944, he will meet the opposition of the very forces that elected him in each of his previous campaigns. In former days Nye was a progressive leader in a progressive state. It was the Non-Partisan League that first sponsored Gerald P. Nye and that elected him to the Senate in 1926. Time after time it has rallied to his support. Now it is against him. During recent years the League has grown mote conservative and many of its younger farmer members have turned from it to the Farmers' Union and the cooperative movement. But whatever their political and economic divergences, all three groups are now united in their opposition to Nye and in their support of Usher L. Burdick, one of the state's two Representatives.
