On March 27, morning Joint session with Southwestern Section of the American Accounting Association was held. This article presents information on the Southwestern Social Science Association, held in April 1954, in Dallas, Texas. For the information of the membership it is reported that the incoming Executive Council at its meeting on April 17 determined to hold the 1955 Convention at Dallas, Texas, rather than at Oklahoma City as previously planned, since suitable arrangements in Oklahoma City were not possible. Whereas, The successful handling of the work of this Association is in no small measure due to the selfless dedication of its leadership, and particularly of its Executive Council, whose members have performed their duties painstakingly and at the cost of their other professional interests and leisure; therefore be it Resolved, that the Southwestern Social Science Association, in general business session assembled this seventeenth day of April, 1954, hereby express its heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the concerned people of the association.

The article presents information about the 1951 annual convention of the Southwestern Social Science Association. The convention was held in Austin, Texas, on March 23 and 24. Sessions were held in the Driskill and the Stephen F. Austin Hotels, with the former designated as convention headquarters. President J. L. Waller, Texas Western College, addressed the general meeting following the conference dinner Friday evening, on the subject "Constitutional Problems of Today." At the same session, Chancellor James P. Hart, of the University of Texas, spoke on "The Social Sciences in a Troubled World." The dinner was presided over by the Association's newly elected president, Vernon G. Sorrell, University of New Mexico. The general meeting was held in the Crystal Ballroom of the Driskill. The general business meeting of the Association was held Saturday morning, March 24, and meetings of the executive council took place Thursday evening, March 22 and Saturday morning, March 24. The student section of the Southwestern Sociological Society, which constitutes the Sociology section of the Association, met with the Association, and conducted a special student program.

The article discusses about the population increase in Texas. The latest estimate that the Census Bureau has published for the State of Texas is as of July 1, 1945. This estimate was constructed by first estimating the November, 1943 population chiefly on the basis of registrations for War Ration Book Number, subsequent natural increase was next added, and the net loss to the armed forces was subtracted. Finally, net civilian migration was allowed for by assuming that the indicated net out-migration from Texas between 1940 and 1943 continued to 1945 but at a reduced rate. This method is admittedly a very rough one for estimating the migration during the latter part of the war. One should like to encourage the Texas population project to experiment with the construction of State estimates by other methods, including some using source data that are not available. The pooling of knowledge should be mutually beneficial. Current estimates have many uses, of course, beyond serving as a starting point for the projection of population growth into the future. Many of the same techniques are used in making estimates for current and future periods.

The article presents information on activities of various associations related to social sciences. Nine Texas colleges and universities were represented at the opening session, a breakfast arranged by the Texas Association of University Instructors in Accounting, the only such organization in America. They were hosts to representatives from six other states. At the Joint Session with Sociology it was emphasized that accounting is not only ethically essential to assure honest application of monies entrusted to social agencies, but that the accountants' technique of profit and loss calculation is essentially a means of evaluating favorable and unfavorable features of any situation, and if imaginatively applied, might be an addition to sociological research technique for identification of dependent areas of cities, or of states in such problems as that of relief and old age assistance administration. The prevailing uncertainty or confusion within long established state administrative units, with respect to their effort in assisting with the administration of the newer social legislation, was contrasted by the Texas Assistant State Auditor with their existing ability and readiness to help whenever the state legislatures decide to so assist and provide added funds to enlarge the investigational staff.

The article discusses the basis of urbanism in Texas. The paper presented in the article is in the nature of a preliminary report of a study begun some months ago on the subject of urbanism in Texas. While it is necessarily incomplete, the facts already secured justify presentation of certain conclusions as to the causal factors involved in the location and development of cities in this state. No particular method is utilized in the study to the exclusion of others. Geography is consulted for the facts about the natural environment, to which human life must inevitably adapt itself. History yields information about events, many apparently accidental, which have figured in the location of settlements, later expanded into cities. Statistical correlations show connections between various phenomena, from which the relationship of cause and effect may be inferred. Case studies of selected units give the necessary detail for a sympathetic understanding and appreciation of the interplay of forces between individual and community. The plan of the study as a whole is cast on broad lines. Taking aggregation of population as the prerequisite of urbanism, the investigators have undertaken, as their first task, to present a picture of growth of urban population in Texas. This is obviously necessary for a delineation of the field. The second task involves the discovery, classification and evaluation of the factors responsible for the location and increase of urban aggregations.

This article offers a look at the social problems which confront the state of Texas. The thirteenth annual meeting of the Texas Conference of Social Welfare opens upon a situation in the state which is, gradually but inevitably, growing to be in reality vastly different from the views of it which people have taken. It has been the custom to consider Texas as overwhelmingly a rural state. It has been held that the social problems in the state are primarily, if not exclusively, rural problems. Aside from the large cities in Texas and not in all of these, social work, with the professional social worker at the head, plays, in the estimation of many people, quite an unimportant role. Texas has a total population of 4,633,000 of which 1,512,000 is urban. Of this urban population, four cities, Dallas, San Antonio, Houston and Fort Worth total 563,000. Anyone who has had any experience with social problems knows that a small city, between thirty-five thousand and one hundred thousand inhabitants, can worry one with the most baffling and the most irritating problems of health and delinquency, of family disruption, of unemployment of old people and young children who need to be taken care of, that often leave the larger city a model of organization and efficiency in comparison.

The Department of Accounting of the University of Texas announces the appointment of two new staff members in rank of assistant professor. They are Jim C. Ashburne and Glenn A. Welsch, both of whom hold the M.B.A. from Oklahoma A&M College. The College of Business Administration of the University of Texas held its first annual reunion of alumni on October 5 and 6, 1951. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Tulane University, has inaugurated a program leading to the Ph.D. degree in sociology, commencing with, the year 1951-52. The Middle American Research Institute has completed Volume I of the book "Middle American Research Records," consisting of 16 monographs.

The article presents information about the life and times of Jack Johnson, former dean of the Graduate School and director of the Department of Economics and Sociology at North Texas State College. He died on June 5, 1959. Throughout his professional life he was a member of the South- western Social Science Association and an active participant in its meetings. Johnson was born in Ellis County, Texas, in 1884. He was graduated from the University of Texas with the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1921, the Master of Arts in 1924, and the Doctor of Philosophy in economics in 1931. He joined the faculty of North Texas State College in 1925. Jack, as he was known to colleagues and students alike, will be remembered as a vigorous and stimulating teacher, a courageous fighter for what he believed to be right, a warm and sincere friend, and an unsparing giver of time and energy to civic and professional work.

The article presents information on the meetings of the Gamma Chapter of Texas of the sociological society Alpha Kappa Delta at the University of Texas. At the first meeting for the spring semester, Professor Genevieve Wilcox, a member of Gamma Chapter, read a very interesting paper on "The History of Laredo (Texas)." The next three meetings we considered the following papers, given by members of the Gamma Chapter: "The Background of European Sociology," by Kathleen Thompson; "The Background of American Sociology," by Josephine Evans; and "Trends in Attitudes Toward the Data With Which Sociology Deals," by Rex Hopper.

The article presents information about two books received by the September 1970 issue of the journal "Society for the Study of the Labor History." The books are: "Labor History," vol. 11, and "Social Sciences Today." Discussion regarding the first book the article reveals that the first of these issues contains an interesting "case study" by T.B. Brewer of state anti-labor legislation in Texas. About the second book mentioned in this article it is informed that the first of these issues contains an article of a probing and preliminary and therefore, stimulating, sort on "The general and the particular in historical, ethnographical and sociological research."
