This article focuses on the adventurous activities of A. Henry Savage Landor, an adventurer. As far as the author know his recital of adventures in Yeddo did not arouse great opposition. This was his first journey of importance; its results are set forth in a spirited book, "Alone With the hairy Ainu, or 3,800 Miles on a Pack Saddle." It contains more of hair-breadth escapes than befall everyone who have ventured far afield from the Thames or the Hudson. But the author think its extravagances were forgiven by many as an inherent quality of the artistic temperament. The storms of criticism fell upon him later when, in 1897, he bolted in and out of Tibet, China without official blessing, either from his countryman or from the outraged Tibetans.
