The article presents the comments of C. Lester Hogan, president of Fairchild Camera and Instrument Corp., on a new era facing the computer industry. The decades of the 1970s and the 1980s are expected to experience the introduction of electronic data processing in greater abundance for individual use by students, housewives, businessmen and salesmen as well. It is believed that computer installations which now require large floor space will be housed in an extremely small area in future. These reductions in size will bring about comparable decreases in costs and dramatic increases in the performance and versatility of computers. Progress in the semiconductor memory field has been so rapid, that within the next few years high-speed bipolar read-write memories for computers are expected which are 5 to 10 times faster than today. If all computer technologies follow these same growth and performance patterns, the futuristic applications which until now have only been in imagination will arrive all the sooner.
