The article discusses a study which attempted to delineate a psychology of smoking by making comparisons between smoking habits and hundreds of personality variables. Study subjects were a panel of Harvard alumni who were selected during their sophomore years for lack of visible abnormality. Questions about smoking habits were routinely asked in the questionnaires given to subjects during the years they have been monitored. Study findings suggest that it is the needs that lead to heavy smoking after the habit has begun that also militate against quitting or cutting down.
