Abstract

Preliminary to the establishment of generalizations about dimensions of migration streams, there must be the development of efficient parameters for describing these flows. Simple parameters, based upon linear distance measures or their elaborations, prove inadequate in conserving the breadth of spatial information contained in the set of flows. The significance of directionality and departures from isotropy are stressed in this analysis of migration fields generated by the 1955-60 inter-urban streams in the continental United States.
