The article focuses on the challenges facing the maintenance of the Statue of Liberty on Bedloe's Island in New York City. The profits collected from the statue go to the Treasury's General Fund instead of reverting to the National Park Service which could make improvements on the site. Wire net were used to protect the statue from vandalism by tourists. Expenses for the maintenance of the statue include electricity bill at an average of $450 a month and $1,000 for janitors.
