L'auteur part du postulat suivant : une positon sociologique au sujet d'un problème ne peut prendre naissance qu'à partir des problèmes tels qu'ils sont formulés par les acteurs sociaux intéressés. La situation-problème doit être analysée par rapport à la position sociale des acteurs qui en sont les porteurs et par rapport à celle occupée par le chercheur qui approche ce problème. La recherche concernant les problèmes relatifs au " pacte scolaire" en Belgique révèle un lot de définitions contrastées selon les différentes positions sociales en présence. Les pouvoirs organisateurs des réseaux d'enseignement et les élites des par tis politiques nationaux essaient de maintenir le cloisonnement des organisations. Cela est surtout perceptible chez les défen seurs de l'enseignement catholique, mais aussi dans le chef des socialistes qui, plaidant en priricipe pour le décloisonnement, sont en fait contraints, par la situation, de chercher à conser ver un équilibre politique et idéologique. Les libéraux, quant à eux, occupent à cet égard une position ambigue : d'une part, en tant que co-signataires du pacte-scolaire, ils sont affectés par le jeu politique du " donner " et du " prendre " ; d'autre part, ils sont le groupe politique le moins cloisonné et leur parti s'adresse depuis 1961 implicitement aussi aux catholi ques. L'équilibre est maintenu grâce aux références à la liberté constitutionelle de l'enseignement, traduite en " liberté de choix du chef de famille " selon ses convictions religieuses et philo sophiques. Les portes-parole de l'enseignement catholique croi ent évidemment qu'une école est choisie pour des motifs re ligieux. Cependant les libéraux et les socialistes recourent au même schéma d'évidence à propos de leurs exigences en faveur de l'enseignement " neutre. " Selon eux, on doit continuer à étendre ce réseau d'enseignement pour les parents qui ne désirent pas d'éducation catholique. Une série de groupes plus ou moins marginaux par rapport aux organisations cloi sonnées et aux partis nationaux combattent ces schémas d'évi dence. Les définitions de ces groupes peuvent être résumées sous l'expression " société sécularisée." Selon eux, une école est de plus en plus choisie pour des motifs profanes. Pour I'auteur, l'analyse des définitions permet quelques réflexions, critiques sur l'usage des concepts de " sécularisa tion, " cloisonnement, " " réligieux" et "profane" dans le champ social. Sa conclusion est que l'explication sociologique de la sécularisation, en tant que processus englobant, doit etre perçue comme sujette à caution et que le sociologue doit plutõt focaliser son analyse sur les groupes qui prônent la sé cularisation, les sécularisateurs. L'auteur montre que dans l'idéologie des groupes étudiés, la justification et l'explication de la participation aux réseaux d'enseignement sont récherchés dans les motifs individuels des parents. L'auteur y oppose la structure préétablie de chacun des réseaux et qui est la conséquence de la structure cloisonnée de la société belge. Le cloisonnement est la conséquence de diverses sous-cultures et des tissus de relations sociales au niveau des communautés locales.

Phytoplankton response to environmental pollution by oil and emulsifiers has been studied. The nanoplanktonic flagellate Platymonas tetrathele has been assayed with increasing concentrations of crude oil, industrial non-ionic emulsifiers and mixtures of these products. Cultures poisoned with an emulsifier with an aromatic solvent exhibited a very long lag phase. Diminished growth rates were observed for all the products tested most of the time at concentrations above 50ppm. The mixtures showed a toxicity close to that of the emulsifier component at its concentration in the mixture and lower than that of the crude oil alone. Fine structure modifications have been investigated and the possible ecological effects of such pollution have been discussed.

SummaryHaemodynamic studies were performed in 11 hypertensive patients, first while they were receiving placebo and then after one months treatment with a beta-adrenergic blocking agent (I.C.I. 66,082).An average fall in mean arterial blood pressure of 26.2 mmHg was obtained. Although the mean total peripheral resistance showed little change, data from individual patients show a correlation between changes in blood pressure and resistance. There was no correlation between fall in pressure and fall in cardiac output.

By means of combinatorial analysis, group-subgroup relations and geometrical and symmetrical considerations the authors have derived the 198 former theoretical cases of superstructure characteristic of 1 : 1 order in the octahedral sites B of the spinel structure. Seven classes of equivalent superstructures were obtained — each of them is characterized by one of the following space-groups or enantiomorphous pair of space-groups : Imma — {P4₁22/P4₃22} — P˗4m2 — Pma2 — P2/b — P2₁/m — P1. Sociological research in three Catholic «pillar» organizations (the Catholic school system, the Christian hospitals and the Catholic University) indicates that secularization is not followed by a «de-pillarization» or crumbling of the Catholic pillar. Our explanation suggests a process of secularization within the Catholic organizations, with as main components : the development of a social-cultural christianity - which may be considered a secular surrogate for church-religion -, and professionalization by which the christian organizations provide a milieu which ensures job security and social advancement for its loyal members. Thanks to its informal and formal ties with the Christian pillar organizations, the CVP acts on both components, by stressing a specific identity and by defining the interests of the pillar organizations. This explanation may indicate some major aspects of the ties between sociological Catholics and «their» political party - a bond which is certainly not being affected by the secularization processes, rather the contrary is occurring.

Summary A case of pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis is reported; the diagnosis was made at an early stage of the disease by means of pulmonary biopsy. Fairly complete pulmonary function studies have been performed; the results are discussed with reference to the pathological findings and to previous reports of the literature. Uneven ventilation seems to be a prominent functional disturbance, occurring rather early in the course of the disease. Impairment of oxygen diffusion is probably related to the occurrence of alveolar septal fibrosis; both were absent in this moderately advanced case.

An analytical technique has been developed for the separation and quantitative determination of glycine peptides, from glycine to heptaglycine, with a possible extension to octaglycine and nonaglycine. Using an amino acid analyzer, a cation exchange resin and a citrate buffer of pH 3.35 (gradient elution is not required), the complete separation takes 3 hours 30 minutes. The quantitative precision is about 3%. The elution order can be explained on the basis of two mechanisms

The effect of beverages containing ethanol was studied in male adult (Wistar derived) rats subjected to avoidance learning in a shuttle-box. Five sessions, each of 50 trials were held every 24 hr for 5 days. The following groups of rats drank ad lib during the 3 days prior to the first avoidance session and throughout the test period: (1) A control group which drank 1 3 isocaloric (related to alcoholic beverages) glucose in tap water. The animals drank about 3 volumes glucose related to one volume of alcoholic beverages. (2) Ethanol (17% v/v plus 2.0% glucose). (3) Sweet sherry (17% ethanol v/v plus 2.0% reducing sugars). (4) Artificial sherry made by mixing the volatile components (methanol, acetaldehyde, ethanol, n-propanol, ethylacetate, iso-butanol and iso-amylic alcohol) of sherry in water plus 2.0% glucose. (5) Artificial sherry without ethanol. (6) A control group which drank only water. No statistically significant difference was observed between the control groups on the avoidance learning task. Ethanol, sherry and artificial sherry significantly increased the performance level over that of the controls. The effect of ethanol was observed in the 5 sessions; that of sherry and artificial sherry after the third session. This difference is attributed to the absence of volatile congeners in the ethanol solution. In rats drinking for 19 days prior to the first avoidance trial and throughout the test period, neither ethanol nor sherry improved the performance level. When naive rats with an initially low performance level drank ethanol from the end of the first session and up to the last session their performance level was significantly increased. This effect was not observed when the rats drank sherry. After having drunk ethanol for 24 hr, the individual progress of rats with a low performance level was significantly increased until the last session. However, after having drunk sherry, individual progress was significantly favored in the 2nd session only.

The Sluice Dock at Ostend has been investigated for phytoplankton populations and primary production for the years 1971 and 1972. Nannoplankton is demonstrated to take a prominent part in pelagic primary production. The seasonal cycle shows a short spring outburst of Eutreptiella marina da Cunha followed by a depressed production period (May). Summer is the most productive; several nannoplankton populations appear successively in this period. The depression in May is discussed in relation to zooplankton activity.

A few statistical considerations for clarifying the choice of a “ normal period ”. A problem often encountered in widely different fields where a series of observations taken over variable periods is available consists in choosing a “ normal period ” appropriate to the establishment of a representative index. Such an index generally aims at predicting a precise phenomenon. The antagonistic problems of including the greatest possible number of stations on the one hand and the longest possible series of measurments on the other, take the form for the statistician of making the optimum compromise between the time and space sampling errors affecting the prediction. A rational solution can be obtained when a probabilistic simplification of the classical type is made. The authors indicate how the theoretical developments, to which they are led, can be applied to the choice of a rain gauge index for the prediction of summer discharges in a water-course. As a numerical example they give the case of the Haute-Durance., Un problème rencontré fréquemment dans des domaines très divers, où l'on dispose de séries d'observations portant sur des durées variables, consiste dans le choix d'une « période normale » propre à l'établissement d'un indice représentatif. Un tel indice vise généralement à la prédiction d'un phénomène précis.
