Abstract

The article discusses updates on heavy element research particularly transuranium elements. The commercial uses for various transuranium elements like plutonium-238, americium-241, and californium-252 are described. The continued production of heavy elements in isotope form is centered in the Oak Ridge National Laboratory of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission under the management of Union Carbide Corp. Information on how heavy elements are formed is also presented. INSET: Setting a trap for cosmic rays.

Abstract

By means of a gel filtration technique it is shown that plutonium and americium differ in their mode of binding to two glycoproteins isolated from bovine cortical bone. Plutonium binds more strongly than americium, plutonium binding is maximal at pH 6 and americium at pH 8, and sialic acid is involved in the binding of plutonium but not americium. The mechanisms by which these elements bind to glycoproteins in vitro are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
