Elastic tissue hyperplasia occurs normally in senile atrophic mammary tissue. It occurs also pathologically in mammary carcinomata, as a local reactive response Of the host's tissues to the tumour growth. It is suggested that a further study of these elastic changes in relation to the site of mammary carcinoma origin and in relation to other suspected precancerous conditions, would be of academical and practical value to our knowledge of the pathogenesis and pathology of mammary carcinoma.

CHAPTER I This chapter contains an account of Dhu'r-Rumma' s life based on a study of the anecdotal material and its conflicting versions in relation to some passages in his diwan, together with the historical background with special reference to:- (a) His nickname of Dhu'r-Rumma. (b) The question of his acquaintance with the art of writing and the philologists' attempt to create the impression of his being illiterate, thus confirming that his language was pure and chaste and fit for citational needs. (c) A more or less chronological order of his contacts with his patrons. (d) A discussion of his love for Mayya and other women, establishing that Kharqa was not Mayya. (e) A review of the different anecdotes concerning his death and the story of his burial. CHAPTER II A discussion of his social and cultural background - his Bedouin character and simple behaviour, illustrated in his ready participation in the goy of the community and his attitude towards some philosophical and religious issues. CHAPTER III. An attempt is made here to draw a conspectus of the Bedouin school of poetry as a product of Bedouin life, based upon the flow of associated thoughts and images and projected on a desert background. This is followed by a discussion of Dhu'r-Rumma as a representative of his school belonging to it both by environment and culture, his place amongst its poets and his achievement together with a comparison of some of his themes with those of his predecessors and ending with descriptions of his desert environment. CHAPTER IV A discussion of his ghazal poetry as reflecting the influence of the 'Udhris as well as his own personal experiences, with some emphasis on his Bedouin ghazal in portraying Mayya as the embodiment of the Bedouin ideal of beauty and epitomising the mostoeautiful aspects of the desert as well. CHAPTER V His social relationships as illustrated in his panegyrics and satire, revealing that he was first and foremost an artist obsessed with singing of his feelings and emotions about his desert and about his beloved though responding in praise and satire to necessity and the pressure of tribal revelry respectively. CHAPTER VI A review of his artistic attitudes, and his poetical obsession; then his poetry as evaluated by his contemporaries and by literary critics subsequently. The study ends with a conclusion based on the main points of the previous chapters.

In this Thesis, details of a proposed method for the elastic-plastic failure load analysis of complete building structures are given. In order to handle the problem, a computer programme in Atlas Autocode is produced. The structures consist of a number of parallel shear walls and intermediate frames connected by floor slabs. The results of an experimental investigation are given to verify the theoretical results and to demonstrate various factors that may influence the behaviour of these structures. Large full scale practical structures are also analysed by the proposed method and suggestions are made for achieving design economy as well as for extending research in various aspects of this field. The existing programme for elastic-plastic analysis of large frames is modified to allow for the effect of composite action of structural members, i.e. reinforced concrete floor slabs and the supporting steel beams. This modified programme is used to analyse some framed type structures with composite action as well as those which incorporate plates and shear walls. The results obtained are studied to ascertain the influence of composite action and other factors on the load carrying capacity of both bare frames and complete building structures. The theoretical failure load presented in this thesis does not predict the overall failure load of the structure nor does it predict the partial failure load of the shear walls and slabs but it merely predicts the partial failure load of a single frame and assumes that the loss of stiffess of such a frame renders the overall structure unusable. For most structures the analysis proposed in this thesis is likely to break down prematurely due to the failure of the slab and shear wall system and this factor must be taken into account in any future work on such structures. The experimental work reported in this thesis is acknowledged to be unsatisfactory as a verification of the limited theory proposed. In particular perspex was not found to be a suitable material for testing at high loads, micro-concrete may be more suitable.

The main effect of noise on the performance of a non-linear oscillator may be characterised in two ways: a) by a broadening in the output spectrum, or b) by an uncertainty in the oscillator frequency (i.e. as measured by zero counting method). There are many methods for analysing this problem. In this work a new method using generalised definitions of amplitude and phase is presented. The contents of the chapters are as follows: Chapter 1. An introduction to the problem of noise in non-linear oscillators is made. After describing main sources and effects of noise, a brief account of existing methods is given. Method of the work is introduced and compared with other approaches. Finally, a statement of originality is made. Chapter 2. Normalized equations are derived from physical circuits. Various solutions of the noiseless oscillator equation are presented. Chapter 3. The potential function are developed and their relationship to amplitude and phase demonstrated. A generalisation of phase and amplitude is made. Chapter 4. Analysis of the noise is made by transforming the oscillator equation into the curvilinear co-ordinates formed by the equipotentials of the potential functions. Chapter 5. Discussion of the results and suggestions for future work are made.
