The purposes of this study were: (1) to ascertain the relative importance of selected attributes of curriculum development in vocational and technical education in Ethiopia, (2) to ascertain the extent of agreement in opinions among selected specialists in the United States, vocational-technical teachers and secondary school principals in Ethiopia regarding the relative importance of selected attributes, (3) to ascertain the extent of agreement in opinion between the specialists and the participating groups of teachers and principals in ranking the attributes, and (4) to propose a procedure for developing relevant curriculums in vocational and technical education in Ethiopia. Using Ralph W. Tyler's rationale for curriculum development, a questionnaire was prepared using selected attributes organized under 16 blocks relating to (1) objectives, (2) subject matter content, (3) learning experiences, and (4) evaluation with respect to vocational and technical education in Ethiopia. The seven items under each of the blocks were then ranked in order of importance by the participating individuals. Based on analysis of the data, a 14-step procedure for developing relevant curriculums in vocational and technical education in secondary schools of Ethiopia was recommended. (Author)

A model of the surface grinding operation is proposed in which the leading section of the working face of the wheel is considered to be primarily responsible for the removal of workpiece material. A subsequent section, the “rubbing width”, acts only to influence the workpiece surface finish and a final trailing section takes no part in the grinding process. This model is examined experimentally using a split-workpiece dynamometer to determine the variation in grinding force across the wheel face and a thermocouple device to indicate the extent of the contact between the wheel and the workpiece. These two techniques are found to be operable, the former perhaps yielding the more reliable results. The force distribution and the form of profile worn on the wheel are found to be in sympathy and the workpiece surface roughness is found to decrease as the rubbing width, that is the overall contact width minus a metal removal or cutting width, increases.

Studies were conducted on the diversity, distribution and physicochemical characteristics of phytoplanktons of Pindiga Pond. Water and phytoplankton samples were collected for three months at ten (10) days interval. The objective of the present research is to determine the phytoplanktons distribution and physicochemical characteristics of the Pond. Standard procedures were adopted for determination of physicochemical parameters viz; Temperature, pH, Transparency, Conductivity, Nitrate, Phosphate, Dissolved oxygen (DO), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD).These physicochemical characteristics were observed to have varied within the period of the study. Seventeen (17) genus, Thirteen (13) orders, four (4) classes, and four (4) division of phytoplankton were identified, and the class Bacillariophyceae (46 %) was the highest percentage recorded during the study, Chlorophyceae (32 %), Euglenophyceae (19 %) and Cyanophyceae (3%) the least in occurrence and distribution. The study also revealed that pindiga pond had luxuriant phytoplanktons flora, diverse and seasonal with fluctuating pattern of physicochemical characteristics recorded. The main objective of this paper is to explore the nature of social responsibility practices in Nigeria. The paper provides a contribution to the literature by reviewing previous business social responsibility (BSR) practices around the world. The research is conceptual in nature. Finally the studies discover that bureaucratic and institutional affect the implementation of many BSR initiatives in Nigeria.

This study was done to determine the quality of water from hand-dug wells in Kuje, Federal Capital Territory Abuja Nigeria. The study area lies between latitudes 080 53’ 24’’N and 080 53’ 47’’N and longitude 070 14’ 24’’E and 070 14’ 35’’E. Water from twenty wells were randomly sampled. The physical properties investigated are pH, temperature, total dissolved solid (TDS) and electrical conductivity. The chemical analysis involved determination of the concentration of anions (SO42-, HCO3-, Fl-, CO3-, Cl-, NO3) and cations (Ca2+, Mg+, Na+,K+, Zn+, Fe2+, Cu2+. A piper diagram based on the relative percentages of the ions was plotted for classification according to hydrogeochemical facies of each water sample based on their dominant ions. The Piper diagram indicated Ca2+ and HCO3- as the dominant ions and therefore it is Ca−HCO3 water type. The physical properties of the water were found to be good based on World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines and National Drinking Water Quality Standard (NDWQS) and therefore water in the study area is safe for human consumption.KEYWORDS: groundwater, hydrochemical facies, anion, cation, piper diagram

Editorial Note:-This case is reported only on the question of measure of damages under the Northern Nigerian Fatal Accidents Law, sections 2 and 7 of which are set out in the judgment of BELLO, J., below. The interesting feature of these sections is that they apply native law and custom or Moslem law as the case may be to the assessment of damages. In the instant case Moslem law was applied; as the learned judge pointed out, this led to an assessment considerably less than would have been awarded under, in effect, the principles of English law as received and applied in Northern Nigeria. BELLO, J., felt that this discrimination was unfair, and recommended that the same rule, that contained in section 7 (I) (a), should be applied in all cases.

The effect of salmon calcitonin (SCT) on acute inflammation was tested in carrageenan induced foot oedema of the rat. A considerable inhibition of the oedema was obtained with 20 MRC U/kg of SCT. The injection of SCT is followed by decrease of calcemia. A hypothesis of possible inhibition of prostaglandin (PG) synthesis and/or release, caused by decrease of calcemia, is advanced.

Out of 717 patients with meningococcal disease 53 showed one or more of the three allergic complications: 47 (6·6%) developed arthritis, 12 (1·7%) developed cutaneous vasculitis, and 6 developed episcleritis. These complications, which were often multiple, occurred six to nine days after the beginning of the illness and three to six days after the start of successful antibiotic therapy. Those patients with severe systemic disease were prone to the complications. Histological and bacteriological study of the arthritis and vasculitis showed that these lesions were probably not due to persisting infection and suggested that they might be due to immune complex disease.

The epidemiology and clinical features of skin rashes, pyoderma, and pyoderma with nephritis in children and adults in Zaria is described. Scabies is endemic in Zaria especially among young children, and boys at the Koranic schools. Pyoderma follows secondary infection of scabies and is more prevalent towards the end of the humid rainy season in August and September. Acute glomerulo-nephritis is common at this time also. Of 20 patients with pyoderma and nephritis 16 had scabies which had become infected. Group A streptococci were isolated from the skin lesions of 11 patients, but only 2 strains—one each of types M49 and M55—recognized to be associated with nephritis, were recovered. 3 patients had an uncommon type, M26 which had not previously been suspected of causing nephritis. Serum complement was low in all 10 patients with nephritis who were tested. Anti-deoxyribonuclease B was significantly more useful as an index of streptococcal infection than the antistreptolysin 0 titre.
