A simple and reproducible gravity flow technique for the in vitro calibration of electromagnetic flow probes (EMFP) has been developed. The flow probe is mounted in a chamber instead of on an excised vessel and allows saline to flow directly past the contacts. Utilizing the calibrations determined by this technique, a comparison was made between cardiac outputs determined by indicator-dilution methods and the EMFP. There was good correlation (r=0·95) between flows determined by the two methods with low and normal outputs, but was less satisfactory (r=0·87) when high outputs were compared.
