The Phoronida are a coelomate phylum consisting of only two genera and about 12-15 described species. Phoronids probably represent the common ancestral stock of all lophophorates, and may be the most primitive living deuterostomes. Using the techniques of starch gel electrophoresis, we have studied genetic variation at 39 loci in 120 individuals of Phoronopsis viridis collected in Bodega Harbor, Bodega Bay, California. Allelic variation was found at 27 (69.2%) loci. If a locus is considered polymorphic when the frequency of the most common allele is no greater than 0.99, the proportion of polymorphic loci in the total sample is 48.7%. The average number of alleles per locus is 2.23. The expected frequency of heterozygous loci per individual on the assumption of Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium is 9.4%. There is evidence of inbreeding; the mean value of F, Wright's fixation index, is 0.21±0.02. Genetic variability in P. viridis is intermediate among marine invertebrates. The tropical clam, Tridacna maxima, has on the average 20.2% heterozygous loci per individual. At the other extreme, a brachiopod from Antarctica, Liothyrella notorcadensis, has an average of 3.9% heterozygous loci per individual. Among marine invertebrates, there seems to be a gradient of decreasing genetic variability from low to high latitudes, which may reflect their different adaptive strategies. © 1974 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

A population of the cosmopolitan deep-sea ophiuran Ophiomusium lymani was studied by gel electrophoresis, and proved to be highly variable genetically; about 53% of the 15 loci studied are polymorphic, and the average individual is heterozygous at about 17% of the loci. This is approximately the same genetic variability displayed by other species, belonging to other phyla or classes, from the same deep-sea trawl. A similarly high level of genetic variation occurs in deep-sea organisms in general, and in a shallow-water tropical species. Both the deep-sea and the tropics are trophically stable environments. On the other hand, low genetic variabilities have been found in marine species from trophically unstable environments. These data suggest that any phylogenetic effects on genetic variability are secondary, and that the trophic regime may be of major importance in determining genetic strategies of adaptation. © 1974 Springer-Verlag.

Experimental determinations of Drosophila population dynamics cannot be explained by the Lotka-Volterra model of interspecific competition. This paper presents other possible mathematical models of competition between species, and gives the results of experiments designed to test the validity of such models. Eight of the ten new models presented contain the Lotka-Volterra model as a special case. The experiments made to test the models are of two kinds. Type 1 experiments are continuous one- or two-species populations, which permit the estimation of the carrying capacity of each species and the numbers of the two species at the point of stable equilibrium. Type 2 experiments measure the change in numbers over a short time interval in populations started with many different initial densities of the two species. Type 2 experiments give information on the dynamics of the two-species system in the phase plane whose coordinates are the number of individuals of each species. The models accounting best for the results are models five and seven (Table II). Each of these two models contains one parameter more than the Lotka-Volterra model. Model five adds a nonlinear term of self-interaction (-βiN2i). Model seven has the form, dNi/dt = riN/Kθii(Kθii - Nθi i - αijNj1-θi i). The exponential parameter θ removes the restriction of the logistic theory of population growth, that each individual added to the population decrease the rate of growth of the population by a constant amount. With model seven the rate of growth of a population of a single species need not have its maximum at K 2, that is when the number of individuals is half the carrying capacity of the environment. © 1973.

Fifteen second chromosomes were extracted from Drosophila willistoni flies collected in four natural populations. The adaptedness of populations homozygous for each chromosome was measured by average population size and productivity. Six 'control' populations were established with mixtures of the wild second chromosomes. The Darwinian fitness of flies homozygous for each wild second ehromosome, and of flies carrying random combinations of these chromosomes, was measured relative to the fitness of flies heterozygous for a wild and a marker chromosome. The Darwinian fitness of homozygotes for each second chromosome relative to the fitness of flies carrying random combinations of the natural chromosomes was then inferred. The estimated loss of fitness on making the natural second chromosomes homozygous was substantial, ranging from 39 to 83 pereent, with an average reduction in fitness of 66 percent. These results with D. willistoni are consistent with those from similar experiments with other drosophila species, and they are compatible with a significant role for heterosis in the maintenance of genetic variability. Populations homozygous for wild chromosomes differ in their adaptedness to the experimental environment. Population size and productivity are correlated, although the correlation is far from complete. Some populations have high productivity and low population size, or vice versa. The control populations, with greater genetic variability, were superior in adaptedness to the average of the single-chromosome populations. The Darwinian fitness and the adaptedness of the genotypes in this experiment were not significantly correlated. It follows that certain measures used by population geneticists, such as genetic load and average Darwinian fitness, cannot be taken as general indices of how well adapted a population is to its environment. © 1971 Martinus Nijhoff.

We have studied allelic variation at 28 loci coding for soluble enzymes in three sibling species of Drosophila. The average proportion of polymorphic loci per population is 58% in D. willistoni, 71% in D. equinoxialis, and 60% in D. tropicalis. An individual of any one of these three species is heterozygous at 18-22% of its genes. The correlation between the amount of polymorphism at a given locus and the equilibrium constant of the reaction catalyzed by the corresponding enzyme is not significantly different from zero. We have separated enzymes into those involved in glucose metabolism (group I) and all other enzymes (group II). The genes coding for group II enzymes are about twice as polymorphic as those coding for group I enzymes. © 1972 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
