THOUGH IN RECENT YEARS several studies of trade credit have appeared in the literature, such as those of Bates [1], Brechling and Lipsey [2], Junk [10], Laffer [12], Meltzer [14], and Nadiri [15], emphasis has been at the highest level of aggregation. This study is addressed to the nature of trade credit for a single industry-Lumber and Wood Products. The Lumber and Wood Products Industry, excluding furniture (S.I.C. Major Group 24), was selected as the empirical medium for this investigation for two reasons. First, it is one of the twenty largest U.S. industries. Second, it approaches pure competition in the output markets, if not in the input 'markets.' For this latter reason, complicating conditions arising from other market structures characteristic of most major industries could legitimately be ignored in a quest for essential characteristics of trade credit. The specific question addressed is "To what extent are observed changes in trade credit variables-accounts receivable, accounts payable, and net trade credit-endogenous phenomena within the industry system or exogenously determined by outside economic relationships?" The importance of determining the relative endogeniety of trade credit is suggested in the following passage

CHARLES DARWIN LIKENED IT to a "huge black castle"; Napoleon called it "this accursed island"; romantics have dubbed it the "Ocean Roadhouse" and "Das kleine Paradies"; ... the islanders call it [slnt ell·ne]. Seventeenth century cartographers frequently mislaid it and modern cartographers have been known to place their legends on top of it. But St. Helena, an island of 47 square miles lying 1,000 miles off the west coast of Africa, is, I suggest, of interest to stu~ents of place-names. Because of the remarkable conservatism which the islanders have displayed in their retention of place-names, the island's history is written on its map. It is exceptional for a new name to replace an old. Even some sixteenth century place-names survive, and seventeenth century names are particularly tenacious. Houses usually keep the names of their first owners, so the Bateses will not now be found living at Bates's, or the Robinsons at Robinson's, for Bates died in the seventeenth century, Robinson in the early nineteenth. A newcomer to the island who is confused by this practice will be infuriated, moreover, at the persistence of names for features which no longer exist: Black Gate, Cason's Gate, Gold Mine Gate (which is doubly absent as there was never a gold mine), Boyce's Gate, Hutt's Gate, Grape Wine (or Vine) Gut,! Gordon's Post and Grand Marshall's Walk have vanished, but are still referred to as landmarks. St. Helena has preserved a very full record of her past and she has inspired several historians to publish the results of their research.2 Consequently, the origin of many place-names is known, although it is certain that a search of the archives would turn up more facts. On my visits to the island I have not been able to examine the archives but I have, however, been able to exercise a daughter's privilege and call on the help of my father (who lives on the island and is the A. H. Mawson who appears in the footnotes) to supplement the list of St. Helena names published by the U.S. Board on Geographical Names in 1957 and to record new information.

Professor Gabor and Mr. Bates, together with Messrs. Barnard, Midgley and Hanmer‐Lloyd are quite correct in pointing out our arithmetical slip and the incorrect differentiation of the opportunity loss function. Throughout the development of the sociology of science, one of the focal points of empirical investigation has been the study of scholarly productivity. A number of variables have been examined in regard to their impact upon productivity including sex (Austin, 1969), age (Pelz and Andrews, 1966), quality of department of doctoral training (Hagstrom, 1971), institutional affiliation (Crane, 1965), college grades (Folger et al., 1971), and professional orientation (Babchuk and Bates, 1962). One factor, however, which has received little attention is race. As Conyers (1968) has pointed out, students of productivity have generally ignored race as a possible explanatory variable. The present study attempts to shed some light upon the relationship between race and research output by examining the productivity of black and nonblack holders of the Ph.D.

The North American components of the tribes Phoracanthini and Sphaerionini have probably been subject to greater confusion than any other groups of Cerambycidae. The writings of Lacordaire, LeConte, Horn, Bates, and Casey contain striking differences of opinion, and in almost any large collection one can find a great many species masquerading under incorrect names. Although additional material has done much to clear up this confusion, it is felt that our knowledge of these groups is still too imperfect to warrant a complete revision at this time. Such a revision can only be undertaken when the fauna of Mexico and tropical America has been more thoroughly collected. It is the object of the present paper merely to propose a tentative arrangement of the genera and to make known such new species and changes as seem advisable at this time. SOCIOLOGISTS HAVE long been aware of the existence of relations between sociocultural variables and the development of types of scientific knowledge. Until relatively recently, the systematic study of the importance of these relations for knowledge in the social sciences has been more or less overlooked. To be sure, there was speculation about the impact of social and cultural factors upon the works of intellectuals in early studies by Veblen (1918), Mannheim (1936), and Weber (translated, 1949), and in later works by Lynd (1939), Znaniecki (1940), Wilson (1942), and Myrdal (1959). Sociologists, however, have appeared especially reluctant to test empirically the relevance of many hypotheses for the development of knowledge in sociology suggested in these works. Studies regarding the function of the social organization of the discipline, climates of opinion, and the social backgrounds and personal values of researchers have tended to be unfashionable. The assumption has been that improvements in research techniques and the rigors of the scientific method rule out significant influences by such factors (Curtis and Petras, 1970a). Some research, however, has begun to evolve in this area, and our purpose in this article is to examine the nature and types of works that have been done. No major American or European scholar has yet specialized in research in the sociology of sociology (but see Waller, 1932; Page, 1963, 1965; Horowitz, 1964, 1967a, 1968; Friedrichs, 1970; Gouldner, 1970; Reynolds and Reynolds, 1970; Tiryakian, 1970), and only occasionally are students introduced, in graduate courses, to some of the scattered findings which suggest that this area would prove a rich one for sociological inquiry. There have, as yet, been no large scale studies of sociology as a research or teaching enterprise. Such studies certainly would be of practical and scientific value in the rapidly developing sociologies of the professions, education, and science. This relative neglect to study the activity of sociologists is, in itself, an interesting problem that requires study from a sociology of sociology perspective. Some changes are taking place. Recently, the number of studies has increased, and further evidence of increasing interest in this area has been reflected in the publications of several symposia which focus on "sociological self-analysis." We explore the integration of trust and distrust as defined by Lewicki, McAllister, and Bies (1998) with its effects on team-based designs. A hypothetical long-term contract simulation was used to study trust and distrust through a medium-term, qualitative analysis. Results indicate that teams respond differently to trust and distrust perceptions in the development of contracts. Discussion of the Lewieki et al. (1998) model demonstrates that while trust served to loosen formalities between teams and led to higher perceived quality, the presence of distrust led to the development of competition between teams, higher inter-team accountability and lesser perceived quality. Introduction Organizations have not only been witness to but active participants in a major phenomena over the past twenty years: the increasing use of teams to develop and implement long-term contracts used in outsourcing organizational work (Adler, 2004; Barthelemy & Adsit, 2003; Benfratello & Sembenelli, 2002; Boswell, 2000; Cohen & Bailey, 1997; Paladino, Bates & da Silveira, 2002; Schilling & Steensma, 2001). An assumption behind outsourcing is that trust improves communication and cooperation between teams in the accomplishment of organizational work (Boon & Holmes, 1991; Dasgupta, 1988; Jeffries & Reed, 2000; Mayer, Davis & Schoorman, 1995). While it is clear that research has indicated a need for trust in partnering relationships, the study of how trust and distrust affect inter-team based designs is clearly understudied and, thus, underdeveloped. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to our understanding of the effects of trust and distrust perceptions on inter-team processes and outcomes. Using Lewicki, McAllister, and Bies's (1998) model of trust and distrust, we studied groups in a capstone business course to more fully understand how inter-team interactions are affected by the perception of simultaneous trust and distrust. This paper investigates two fundamental assumptions with regard to trust and distrust. First, we explore the basis for understanding how inter-team relationships are affected by simultaneous trust and distrust. Given the fast-paced nature of today's work environment, the formation of 'swift' trust and distrust implies that teams have to make quick decisions based on interdependence of work between teams. This study also provides a fundamental assessment of how simultaneous trust and distrust perceptions affect the formality and boundaries of inter-team interactions. Since teams are being used more frequently and for more varied types of work, an investigation of Lewicki et al.'s (1998) model is long overdue. Do trust and distrust work together as hypothesized by Lewicki et al. (1998)? This study provides insight into how teams parlay perceptions of trust and distrust into a future partner relationship. The Integration of Trust and Distrust in Long-Term Contracting Outsourcing typically involves some degree of negotiation between teams and research in the outsourcing of organizational work providing an intricate blend of information regarding team adaptation and communication (Adler, 2004; Bell, 1990; Helewitz, 2003; Robinson & Volkov, 1998). Outsource teams integrate individual, team, functional and organizational norms in negotiating long-term contracts (Bazerman, 1983; Knorr & Knorr, 1978; Lacity & Willcocks, 1998; Niederman, Brangeay, & Wetherbe, 1991), yet these teams are constrained by contextual factors like trust and distrust. Teams develop long-term contracts based on perceptions of trust and distrust. The concepts of trust and distrust have been researched for over 40 years with an emphasis on the intentions and behaviors of those in which a trading relationship exists (Deutsch, 1960; Hosmer, 1995). Key to understanding trust and distrust is the fact that these concepts are two unique conditions, not opposite ends of the same continuum (Luhmann, 1979). …

If the King James version be preferred, E. S. Bates' The Bible Designed to Be Read as Living Literature' is most attractive. The Aldine Bible-the New Testament, in four volumes, presents the King James text.2 As for the Revised versions, R. G. Moulton's The Modern Reader's Bible presents a good arrangement of the N. T., based upon the English Revised text.3 The American Standard version is now in process of revision, and it is greatly to be hoped that, when issued, the publishers will put out an dition in a style as attractive to students as the others here mentioned. Just about the best tools that can be made available for students in any kind of N. T. course are the three modern translations,-Moffatt's, Goodspeed's, and Spencer's. The 1935 edition of Jas. Moffatt's The Bible, a New Translation was a thorough revision, regarded by Dr. Moffatt as final.4 Various printings are available of E. J. Goodspeed's The New Testament, an American Translation;5 it is included in The Bible, an American Translation; the publishers announce for this autumn The Complete Bible, an American Translation, which will comprise the 0. T. translation, now edited by Theophile Meek, Dr. Goodspeed's new translation of the Apocrypha, first published in 1938, and, of course, his N. T. The New Testame t of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, by Fr. Francis A. In this paper, based on the study of the materials of the collections belonging to Dr. C. A. CAMPOS SEABRA and the author's own, the author gives the additional characters of the rare species Volxemia dianella Lam., Sthelenus braconimus Bates and Sth. ichneumoneus Buq., the redescription of the genus Xenocrasis bates, the descriptions of allotypes of the males of Brasilianus testaceicornis melz., Xenocrasis badeni Bates and Oncideres castanea Dill. & Dill., and the key for the determination of the species Colobothea Serv. with 6 (8) pale spots on the elytra. All these species are from Brazil.

Elisha Bates was a controversial Friend of early nineteenthcentury America, regarded by many Friends in America and England as both "alarming" and "brilliant."1 He has been described as the "official organ" and "the most prominent" among Ohio Orthodox Friends in 1828 ? as a "man of great talents" ;3 and as a man of "strong intellect" who wrote with "marked ability" in his Doctrines of Friends which was judged to be "one of the best brief accounts of Friends' views in existence" in the early nineteenth century.4 Commenting from a perspective outside the Society of Friends, Alexander Campbell's Millennial Harbinger referred to Elisha Bates as one of the "ablest and most devoted" opponents of the views which came to be associated with the name of Elias Hicks.5 The significance and character of Elisha Bates's role in the shaping of Ohio orthodoxy has not been intensively explored by Quaker historians.6 His printing establishment in Mount Pleasant, Ohio, enabled him to publish three periodicals with wide circulation and a number of his own books and pamphlets. In view of his prominent role in Ohio Quakerism, it seems appropriate to examine his life and thought in more detail. The political economy of armamentism dates back into past centuries. Often foregone in current de bates, the old hypotheses prove to contain valuable contributions to the understanding of military expenditures in modern capitalist societies. The politico-economic approach is demonstrated as superior if compared with established normative concepts about how large the military budget should be designed. Using empirical data covering four decades, the tremendous rise in the costs of armaments is demonstrated. Each new weapon tends to cost at least twice as much as the pre ceding equipment of the same category. An inter action model between private capital, the military, and the administration is used to explore the causes for overspending under military headings. Applying theoretical evidence about the role of the state, military expenditures turn out as fulfilling vital functions in the reproduction of capitalist societies.

Bates for his constructive comments on an earlier draft of this paper. 1 Models of organizations have either tacitly assumed that there is consensus on roles in social systems or have failed to recognize the variability of consensus on the manner in which roles are to be performed. Gross, Mason, and McEachern in their study of a New England school system cogently demonstrate the conceptual utility of the role consensus variable. In their reformulation of the role concept, Gross and his colleagues challenge the postulate of role consensus which is explicit or implicit in much of the social science literature. Furthermore, they found that the length of interaction and the extent of homogeneity were related to role consensus within the school member group that they studied. However, their findings gave no support to the hypotheses that interaction and homogeneity were related to role consensus between school board members and school superintendents. Gross and his colleagues further hypothesized that role consensus determined the satisfaction of group members and also influenced the manner in which they evaluated one another. Satisfaction was found to be related to consensus within the school board member group, but was not found to be related to role consensus between school board members and school superintendents. The superintendent's ratings of the school board were found to be related to consensus, but the school board's ratings of the superintendents were not related to consensus. Neal Gross, Ward S. the element of time, the source of many of the greatest difficulties in economics.--Alfred Marshall. The actual practice of economic science has been to first define capital in the concrete, and then, in the problems connected with it, to tacitly substitute again and again the abstract conception.... In the urban middle class, husbands are more likely than wives to initiate primary friendships for the couple at all stages of the family cycle. Couples in their forties and fifties who have been married a longer period of time have neither more nor less primary friends than recently married individuals. The modal number of local primary friendship units is two. Frequent association with relatives is not related to pattern of visiting with friends. Similarly, frequent getting together with friends does not appear to bear any relationship to how frequently couples see relatives. Approximately half of the husbands and wives claimed not to have a single primary friend independent of their spouse. Finally, children are not found to play a constraining role nor do they enhance the prospects that their parents will interact more often with primary friends. T hle present report is concerned with the primary friendlslhips of muiddle class couples. Previously it was foundl that husbands exercised greater influence in determining who the primary friends of the couple would be. Also, friendships initiated by the husband were more primary than those (lesser in nunmber) initiated by the wife.' Infornmatioln fronm two additional samples (one purposive, the other ranclomn) having somewhat different characteristics from the original populationl has now been gathered (a) to provide more detailed informlation bearing on the initial findings alnd (b) to break new ground anld make possible a more refined analysis of primary relations. Thus, as in the earlier research, spouses were asked to idlentify mutual primary friends, indicate who had initiated such friendships, note the types of activities engaged in, provide information on the fr-equency of visiting, and so forth. But in a different vein, informiiation was soughlt on why couples disagreed in the friendship choices they made, on the frequency with which couples saw relatives (assuming that this fact would bear on the frequency with which couples would see friends), and on the role played by children in the friendship patterning of the couple. Finally, the question was raised as to whether spouses maintained primary friends independent of each other. A "primilary friend" was a person with whom one was predisposed to enter into a wide range of activities (within limits imposed by such factors as interests, sex, age, financial resources, etc.), and with whom there would be a predominance of positive affect.2 Such persons in interaction would constitute a primary group. In this formiulation, the sociological dimensions whiich lhave traditionally been viewed as defining the concept, namely, smallness in size, dluration in timne, frequency of interaction, ancl homloogeneity of mlembership were seen as predisposing conditions or effects of primary groups.3 Support of the University Research Council of the University of Nebraska is gratefully acknowledged. The purpose of this essay is to bring together some of the more salient similarities between biology and economics and to argue that, far from being superficial, these analogies are profoundly rooted in the fact that the ultimate subject matter of biology and economics is one, viz., the life process. Most of biology concentrates on the " within skin " life process, the exception being ecology, which focuses on the "outside skin" life process (Bates, 1960, pp. 12-13). Economics is the part of ecology which studies the outside-skin life process insofar as it is dominated by commodities and their interrelations. In what follows the traditional economic (outside skin) and the traditional biological (within skin) views of the total life process will be considered, both in their steady-state aspect and in their evolutionary aspect. Finally an approach to a more general "general equilibrium" model will be suggested by considering the human economy from an ecological perspective.

Historically, confidentiality has been viewed on all educational levels as implicit both in counseling relationships and in the maintenance and use of student records; yet recently, a decision of a Superior Court judge in the state of Maine (the Bates College case) made it obvious that at least college admissions records which show school counselor recommendations are not necessarily legally confidential. With expressed needs for privileged communication in education continuing to manifest themselves through the consideration and passage of legislation, this article reconsiders prevailing legal and ethical limits to confidentiality, with particular reference to the APGA Ethical Standards of 1961.

William Palmer Wynne, Emeritus Professor of the University of Sheffield, died on 16 February 1950, three days after his eighty-ninth birthday. A man of slight build and stature, in later years frail in appearance, with a somewhat ascetic yet attractive countenance, he always looked younger than he was and retained his faculties, his memory and acute intelligence to the end of his long life. He came of a long-lived family for his father reached the age of eighty-nine and his paternal grandfather seventy-nine. His father, William Palmer Wynne, was born in 1835, the son of John Wynne, boot and shoe manufacturer, of Stafford, and married Anne Bates, daughter of an ironmonger of Allerley, Coventry. There were ten children of this marriage, seven sons and three daughters, William Palmer Wynne, the subject of this notice, born on 13 February 1861 at Stafford, being the eldest. The father was employed in the grandfather’s business until it was wound up when, in 1871, he moved to Birmingham as manager of a similar business .

The two species described herein bring the total number of known species of New World Cyrtinini to 17. Since the descriptions are scattered and no key to these species Gas previously available, a brief key to the genera and species in the tribe is presented, being based in part on the descriptions only. I examined the species of Haldeman and Fisher, but not those described by Pascoe, Gahan, Hope, Bates, and Cameron. References to the original descriptions are given by Leng (1920, p. 281) and Blackwelder (1946, pp. 619, 620, and 1957). In Blackwelder's 1946 work the date given for the description ofSciocyrtinusFisher on page 620 should read 1935 instead of 1934. I wish to thank Mr. W. S. Thru loose misquotations made some 25 years after the originally published facts in regard to the important shower of meteoritic dust that fell onto the ship Joshua Bates on November 14, 1856, the misconception has arisen that two such showers had been observed, the second in 1859. It is here shown that all of the references involved correspond to one and the same shower.

Steven Bates, O. D., is director of the Optometric Technicians Program taught in conjunction with the School of Optometry at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Optometric technicians are a new, somewhat radical development in the United States, reflecting some of the modern trends in optometry and in the health professions generally. Some Australian optometrists will know Dr. Bates through his book “Fundamentals for the Optometric Assistant”. I began our conversation by asking Dr. Bates about the relationship of this book with the optometric technician.
