Summary Rhombohedral cleavage faces of quartz have been etched hydrothermally and with fused KOH. Stratigraphical etch patterns were observed on isolated cleavages, matched cleavage faces, and opposite sides of a thin flake. The angle between the () cleavage plane and the planes responsible for the stratigraphical patterns was almost equal to the interfacial angle, 46° 16′ between adjacent rhombohedral faces. It is concluded that the stratigraphical patterns formed by preferential etching reveal the edges of weak planes deposited during growth. The implications are discussed.

Potassium dihydrogen phosphate crystals are grown from aqueous solutions at a constant temperature (30 ± 0.5 °C) and at different supersaturations lying between 3.7 x 10-2 and 35 x 10-2. The dependence of the habit, homogeneity and structural perfection of these crystals on supersaturation and fluid shear has been studied. The variation in the habit, homogeneity and structural perfection with respect to supersaturation and the system of growth has been attributed to the difference in the relative growth rates along different directions, the formation of inclusions and the occurence of complex nucleation processes.

Objective: To observe the congenital abnormalities of female genital tract those are found in our population and their clinical implication. Place of study: Faridpur Medical College Hospital, Faridpur. Study period: January 2001 to December 2005. Methods and Materials: During the study period all cases of congenital abnormalities of female genital tract diagnosed in Faridpur Medical College Hospital were studied. Results: Total 74 women with different types of congenital abnormalities were detected. Though some cases were diagnosed incidentally, the various symptoms they produced were primary amenorrhea, apareunia, dyspareunia, hematocolpos and hematometra, infertility, prolapse uterus, abortions, ectopic pregnancy, premature labour and malpresentations. Among the 74 patients 35(47.3%) patients were treated at this centre, 24(32.4%) patients needed no treatment, 3(4%) patients were referred to higher centres for specialized treatment. Conclusion: Different types of congenital abnormalities of female genital tract are found in our population which cause various symptoms and complications. Though not all abnormalities need treatment and some need very simple treatment, there are some cases which need specialized treatment and expertise. (J Bangladesh Coll Phys Surg 2007; 25 : 23-28)

Aim of this study to screened the root morphology and root characters of different cocoa types at 100 and 50 percent field capacity under water deficit condition at seedling stage. A survey was conducted at Idukki region of Kerala and twenty seven plus trees were identified. These twenty seven plus trees were screened for water stress tolerance under glasshouse condition by gravimetric method. With respect to the performance of plus trees, root length under 50% field capacity got increased to 21.15 cm as against 20.51 cm in 100 per cent field capacity. Fresh root weight and dry root weight substantially got increased under water stress. The average root girth of 27 plus trees got increased in stressed condition from 3.70 cm to 3.88 cm. The root volume also followed the same trend (47.28 as against 45.96). The percent of nitrogen is 1.37 in 50 per cent field capacity as against 1.63 in 100 per cent field capacity. The percentage of phosphorous decreased to 0.16 under 50 per cent field capacity as against 0.37 in 100 per cent field capacity. Similarly the percentage of potassium also showed a decreasing trend (1.27 % under 100 % field capacity to 1.06 % under 50 % field capacity). In the present investigation, under water stress condition the root length, number of roots, fresh weight of root and dry weight of root tends to increase compared to the 100 per cent field capacity, indicating the morphological adaptations of roots to survive under water stress condition. Furthermore, under water stress condition, root nutrients tend to get depleted.

Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate maternal and foetal outcome after fetoreduction in higher order multiple pregnancy. Materials and methods: This descriptive study was conducted at the Infertility Care and Research Centre (ICRC), Dhaka between 2006 and 2009. In eleven (11) cases, multifoetal pregnancy reduction (MFPR) were performed and maternal and foetal conditions were analyzed. All patients got pregnant after fertility treatment. The procedure was done between 8-10 weeks of gestation except in one case which was done at 17 weeks. Transvaginal approach under spinal anaesthesia was adopted for intracardiac injection of potassium chloride till cessation of cardiac pulsation. Antibiotic, aspirin, antispasmodic and progesterone were used for all patients. Main outcome measures were uterine contraction, leaking membrane, bleeding, infection, abortion, gestational age and birth weight. Results: Out of these eleven patients eight patients delivered twins at 37 weeks and one patient delivered a set of twin at 34 weeks and their antenatal period was uneventful. Two patients had abortions, one of which was not related with the procedure. No perinatal death was reported among 18 babies. Each of the babies born had an average weight of 2.42 kg. There was no serious maternal complication except rise of temp in one patient. Conclusion: Fetoreduction can improve the chances of survival and can reduce perinatal morbidity of remaining fetuses and can reduce maternal distress without any adverse affect to mother and foetuses. Three or more consecutive pregnancy losses are considered as recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL). About 1% of all pregnant women face this distressing problem and o.5% to 5% of spontaneous abortions are recurrent. Genetic, environmental, anatomic, hormonal, infectious and immunological factors are associated with RPL. Sometimes several factors might simultaneously be responsible for RPL. So diagnostic work up is to be extended. Life style changes, hormonal supplementation, anticoagulant and immunotherapy and surgical correction of certain uterine anatomic defects might help the couple to be parent. Genetic problem can be overcome by pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and transferring good healthy embryos. Key Words: Recurrent Pregnancy Loss (RPL); Pre Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/akmmcj.v2i2.8170 AKMMC J 2011; 2(2): 29-35

Objective: To identify the institutional factors causing third delay of maternal mortality in Faridpur Medical College Hospital- a tertiary public health care centre in Bangladesh. Design: Cross-Sectional Study. Study period: January 2001 to December 2005. Methods and Materials: The case notes of all maternal deaths were reviewed at the end of each month during the study period. Various factors causing delay in the proper management of the cases were identified and noted. The data obtained from these reviews formed the basis of this study. Results: During the study period total 202 mothers died giving the maternal mortality 2010.5 per 100,000 deliveries. In 130(64.4%) cases one or more institutional factors were identified those contributed significantly to maternal deaths. The identified factors were: delayed blood transfusion or non availability of blood (40%); delayed or lack of operative interventions (37%); late or nonattendance by senior doctors (24.8%); operative interventions done by junior doctors (9.9%); non availability of ICU (intensive care unit) facility (29.7%) and of medicine (7.4%). Conclusion: There is a steady fall in maternal mortality ratio (MMR) in Bangladesh since 1990. But to reach the Millennium Development Goal for maternal health (MDG-5), the MMR will need to decrease at a much faster rate in the future. Improvement of the infrastructural facilities in the hospital can help to remove the preventable institutional factors causing third delay of maternal mortality. This can be a short term strategy to reduce maternal mortality. Key words: Maternal mortality; Institutional factor; Third delay.
