Abstract: A study has been made, using the transpiration technique, of the volatility of chromic oxide in oxygen-argon and oxygen-water vapor-argon mixtures in the approximate temperature range 1300 to 1585 . Volatilization is shown to occur by the reactions r2O3(s) + 3/2O2 (g) =3(g) and Cr2O3(s) + O2 (g) + H2O(g) = 2CrO2OH(g). The standard Gibbs free energy changes are given byAG 0 = 472,800 (6200) - 118.5 (3.6) andAG 0 = 428,200 (9400) — 119.4 (5.6)TJ, respectively, where the reference state for the gases is one standard atmosphere.

The structure of chloroplasts isolated from Dunaliella salina has been studied with respect to changing concentrations of sodium chloride in the culture medium. Freeze-fracture replicas and thin sections of intact chloroplasts do not exhibit any noticeable changes in structure at concentrations ranging between 3·5 and 25 % NaCl. Chloroplasts isolated from algal cells that have been acclimatized to the higher salt concentration show a change in the thylakoid membranes. The thylakoid membranes appear compressed over a major portion of the membrane surface, with only the end of the thylakoid membranes unappressed. The number of particles per unit area on the B face is also altered by the salt concentration. The chloroplasts acclimatized to 25 % NaCl have about 3 times the number of particles per unit area on a B face of endmembranes as on a comparable face of thylakoid membranes acclimatized to low (3·5 % NaCl) salt concentration. These morphological changes can be reversed if the chloroplasts acclimatized to high or low salt concentrations are returned to a medium of different salt concentration prior to freeze-fracturing.

Extract: This study reports the effect of varying specific parameters of mechanical ventilation on aortic PO2in six infants with severe respiratory distress syndrome. Twenty-seven studies were performed during the first 168 hours of mechanical ventilation. In each study, arterial oxygen partial pressure was found to vary directly with airway pressure and inversely with respiratory rate. No correlation was found between rate and pressure, or PaO2, PaCO2, and pHa. Oxygenation of infants with severe respiratory distress syndrome can be significantly influenced by variation of specific parameters of mechanical ventilation independently of change in aortic carbon dioxide tension.Speculation: Optimal oxygenation during mechanical ventilation of infants with severe respiratory distress syndrome is dependent upon selection of the specific and appropriate pattern of ventilation.

AbstractThe effectiveness of incandescent and cool white and black light fluorescent lamps was compared in traps used to sample biting midges, mainly Culicoides sanguisuga(Coq.), around Lac Serpent, Quebec, between 17 June and 31 July 1966. The ratio of the modified geometric mean nightly catches of the lamps was about 1:1:40, respectively. A New Jersey trap with a fluorescent black light is highly effective, and to some extent selective, for Culicoidesspp.

Twenty rabbits were used in a study conducted to determine the soft tissue biocompatibility of vitreous carbon micro-balloons and spheres. Histologic observations were made at designated intervals of 24 hr; 4, 7, and 15 days; and 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 months.The tissues were stained with hemotoxylin and eosin for microscopic observations. The findings showed that the implant material provoked minimal acute and chronic inflammatory response, which indicates that vitreous carbon is biocompatible and may serve as a soft tissue replacement material.No indication of the rejection phenomena was observed during the entire period of this implant study.

Supraglenoidal dislocation of the humerus is uncommon. The anatomical findings in a bilateral example in which efficient pseudarthrosis had developed are described, and the probable evolution of the lesion is discussed.

In order to determine to what extent triglycerides from different human tissues have individual characteristics and whether these patterns are altered by disease, triglycerides from autopsy samples of human perirenal adipose tissue (PRT), heart, and liver were examined for their fatty acid composition and some aspects of their structure (pancreatic lipase hydrolysis and argentation chromatography). When cases were ranked according to the linoleate level of the PRT, the upper half with higher levels consisted mainly of well-nourished persons and the lower half contained more emaciated persons. The cases with higher PRT linoleate levels had, in general, higher total lipid levels in the PRT. Tissue specificity was seen in the tendency for more of the available palmitate to be esterified in the 2-position of heart triglycerides than in PRT or liver triglycerides and in differences in myristate-to-palmitate ratios in PRT and heart triglycerides. Liver triglycerides contained more palmitate, showed a greater tendency for stearate to occur in the 2-position, and had a higher level of the structural type SO2. Whether or not the underlying diseases associated with these different nutritional states influenced these differences remains to be seen.

The Republic of Vietnam urgently needs help from other countries to provide civilian medical care. Children's Medical Relief International (CMRI) has established a modern surgical facility in Saigon. An international staff provides plastic and reconstructive surgery for Vietnamese children suffering from war injuries, domestic and road accidents, destructive facial ulcers, and congenital defects. With Vietnamese personnel now being trained, the hospital will eventually be turned over to the Vietnamese Ministry of Health for future operation. War-injured children number about 6% of admissions; and cleft lips, palates, or both, number 50%. Many burn contractures, ankylosed jaws, and cases of facial noma are encountered. Frequent difficult airway problems are often compounded by repeated oral and facial reconstructive surgical procedures. Our anesthetic experience with CMRI in providing help to the Vietnamese children was deeply rewarding.

AbstractBy comparing the number of moths caught in box-type traps, attractant light sources can be arranged in the following order of efficiency: 15-watt fluorescent rubes emitting ultraviolet and visible light > 15-watt fluorescent tubes emitting cool white light = germicidal rubes behind glass > 15-watt fluorescent tubes emitting ultraviolet but little visible light = 100-watt mercury-vapour bulbs emitting ultraviolet but little visible light. Noctuoid and large geometroid (sent. lat.) moths discriminate between these light sources on the basis of their spectral content, but pyraloids, other small microlepidoptera and some geometroids probably do not. Pyraloid moths escaped in significant numbers from traps with normal apertures (13/4-inch), after sunrise. They freely entered traps with narrow apertures (1/2-inch) but these traps caught fewer large moths.
