1. A patient has been presented whose circulating red blood cells were composed of 65-84 per cent ovalocytes, 3-11 per cent sickled cells, and some normal appearing discoid cells. 2. The red blood cell counts and the blood indices were within normal limitations. 3. The red blood cells showed an increased resistance to hypotonic saline solutions. The peripheral blood showed a daily variation in the percentage of circulating ovalocytes, from 65 per cent to 84 per cent, and in the percentage of circulating sickle cells, from 3 per cent to 11 per cent. 5. After 72 hours in fresh wet preparations the per cent of ovalocytes remained essentially unchanged from that of fresh fixed blood. 6. The percentage of sickled cells was found to be increased after 18, 24, and 72 hours in fresh wet preparations as compared to the percentage of sickled cells found in fresh fixed preparations. 7. Some of the normal appearing discoid red blood cells were observed to sickle in fresh wet preparations within 18 hours.

Porownanie wskaźnikow morfologicznych krwi mieszancow obu pokolen (Tabela 3 i 4) wykazalo, ze ilośc Hb w krwince (MCH) jest w pokoleniu F statystycznie istotnie wyzsza niz w B (.05>p>.02), a objetośc krwinek rozni sie na granicy istotności (p=.05).

In spite of the considerable achievements of the investigations of the different aspects of the saturnism problem, the question of an early diagnosis of the widely spread professional poisoning is not yet concluded. In this aspect, the authors direct their attention on the meaning of the changes of the blood amino acids. By means of paper chromatography are traced the blood amimo acids. — cys, met, arg, his, val, ala, leu, lys and glutamic acid of albino rats in experimental lead poisoning with lead acetat and in the blood of workers contact with lead. A close correlational dependence is established between the amino acid met and cys. changes, the chromatogram and the other satunism indices. These facts are in accordance with the author's observed alterations of the examined amino acids in experimental lead poisoning of animals put on various protein and fatty rations. The meaning of the changes in the blood met and cys concentration is confirmed also by experiments with workers who have been in contact with lead. A very decided correlational dependence between the reduction of the met and cys and the length of service at normal data for the classic blood indices underlines the significance of these acids for the establishing of the earliest stages of the lead action. The authors presume that with the increasing of the number of the experiments with the workers, the presented conclusion will confirm the possibility which the changes of the met and the cys and the other blood amino acids give for an early saturnism diagnosis.

The blood of 104 medical inpatients was examined at various intervals during storage for 72 hours using a Coulter S counter. Over this period remarkable stability of the white cell count, red cell count, haemoglobin, and mean cell haemoglobin was demonstrated. This permits a useful interpretation of indices obtained in routine postal samples sent to the laboratory by general practitioners for screening. Furthermore, the implications of high correlations between red cell indices in freshly examined blood are considered and the regression line MCV = 2·5 MCH + 16 is derived. Using this relationship the normal range of the Coulter S MCHC is defined as 32·6-33·7 g/dl. The significance of the Coulter MCHC in present-day practice is reassessed and the importance of recognizing values for MCV and MCH not coinciding with the regression line is briefly discussed.

The biochemical changes occurring in the blood (blood sugar level, alkali reserve, cholinesterase activity) were insignificant when the neurolytic mixture (2% solutions of chlorpromazine, pentamine, promedol and benadryl) was employed for preventing anaphylactic shock.

Experiments were carried out on male and female hamadryl baboons daily throughout a 24-hour period. The blood sugar and blood ATP fell to a low level at 8–9:00 p.m. Concerning seasonal variation, we showed that the blood ATP and cholestrol blood contents increased during the cold season, whereas the sugar level dropped. The residual nitrogen, inorganic and acid-soluble phosphorus, and plasma proteins showed no regular seasonal or 24-hourly changes. Comparison of these results with variations of the metabolic rate in apes indicated that the blood sugar and blood ATP levels were possibly concerned in controlling energy changes in relation to external environmental conditions.

Immediately after the general irradiation with 600 R the dogs were given butyl alcohol and leucogen in a dose of 0.02 g, in 6–7 days kaferide was added in a dose of 0.2 g. Simultaneously for the first 10 days these dogs received biomycin in a dose of 100,000 units and the next 10 days-levomycetin in a dose of 0.25 g. All the preparations were administered per os, twice a day: butyl alcohol was given for 1 month, leucogen and kaferide-for 2–2.5 months. Of the 14 dogs treated 2 died on the 12th–26th day; of the 15 control animals-12 died on the 9th–22nd day. In the surviving animals radiation sickness was comparatively mild without any marked changes in behavior, temperature, weight and hemopoiesis; marked, but not prolonged leucopenia (900–1,300 per cubic mm) was observed only in several dogs in the absence of complete bone marrow depletion present in the majority of control dogs. Postmorten and histopathological examination of the organs and tissues of the treated dogs performed 2–4 months after irradiation also confirmed the mild course of radiation sickness. There were no marked changes in the biochemical blood indices characteristic of acute radiation sickness (peroxide activity, total phosphorus, creatine, readily splitting iron).

The normal blood picture, different blood indices, and electrophoretic mobility of hemoglobin were determined in the Indian camel with one hump ( Camelus dromidarius). The different values were as follows: erythrocytes, 7.24 million/mm3; hematocrit, 27%; size of red cell, 7.7 µ x 4.2 µ; hemoglobin, 13.1 g/100 ml; mean corpuscular volume, 37.9 µ3; mean corpuscular hemoglobin, 17.4 µµg; mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, 47%; red cell sedimentation rate, 1.1 mm/hr; leukocytes, 18,000/mm3; neutrophils, 51%; eosinophils, 6%; basophils, 0.05%; lymphocytes, 40%; and monocytes, 3%. The electrophoretic mobility of camel hemoglobin was less than the mobility of human and monkey hemoglobin and the hemoglobinogram showed only one minor component. In the one-humped Indian camel, the number of red cells was less, the size bigger, and the hematocrit value lower than the values reported for the two-humped camel ( Camelus bactrianus).

Statistical results on the blood indices of healthy guinea pigs are given. For the first time a distribution curve has been obtained which shows the stability of healthy guinea pig erythrocytes to lysis in acid solution; the measurements were made by the method of Gitel'zon and Terskov.
