Abstract

Two cases of chylothorax associated with generalized lymphangiomatosis (lymphangiectasis) are reported. The first case presented with splenomegaly, thrombocytopenia and afibrinogenemia and later with chylothorax. The second case developed a sudden onset of chylothorax several days after an injury to the thorax. Lymphangiomatous tissue was identified in the posterior mediastinum and peritoneum, in addition to generalized lymphangiectasis in the internal organs. The pathogenesis, treatment and complications are discussed. The possibility of delayed ectasia of abnormally developed lymphatic tissue in these two cases of generalized lymphangiectasis is suggested as the etiologic basis of this disorder.
