The linkage of the plasma protein (Gl-1) and hooded loci has been determined from backcross progeny of the initial crosses Long Evans/Orl×BN/Orl and Long Evans/Orl×Fatty/Orl. The two sets of data show a significant linkage heterogeneity with, respectively, 5.0±2.8 and 15.1±3.0 recombination. This is the fourth linkage of biochemical markers so far demonstrated in the rat.

La chromatographie rapide en phase gazeuse est appliquee a la separation des constituants de differents melanges de gaz permanents et de gaz rares. Diverses solutions analy tiques sont exposees; elles permettent une analyse complete des composants de melanges a partir d'une seule injection d'echantillon. Le resultat est obtenu en utilisant certaines colonnes de separation et en combinant celles-ci de maniere judicieuse suivant les melanges a analyser. Grâce a l'automatisation de l'ensemble analytique un grand nombre de resultats quantitatifs ont ete obtenus. Leur exploitation montre a l'evidence que chromatographie rapide en phase gazeuse et precision ne sont pas incompatibles.

A comprehensive analysis of the characteristics (load and deformation, etc.) of structures consisting of an inextensible tubular envelope filled with a gas, compressed between two rigid surfaces or between a rigid surface and a liquid or pulled down into a liquid by a weight is presented. Such structures can be used as springs or floats. Numerical results, given in a dimensionless graphical form, can be used for engineering design purposes. This analysis of a simple tubular structure can serve as a basis for the study of the behaviour of structures of more complicated shapes.

Analytical calculations are described which are aimed at predicting the elastic moduli of short-fibre composites. The fibres may have a finite aspect ratio and an orientation characterised by one or several parameters, intermediate between randomness and complete alignment in one direction. The application of the results to the prediction or analysis of the mechanical behaviour of parts fabricated by industrial processing techniques, or to the investigation of the flow behaviour of short-fibre composites in the fluid state, is discussed, and experimental results given.

The quantitative description of the flow properties of non-newtonian thermoplastic melts in channels of various geometries is generally satisfactory for application to the design of plastics processing equipment. Mixtures of short glass fibres and non-newtonian thermoplastic melts have been shown to cause special flow problems; furthermore, the properties of short fibre-reinforced thermoplastics in the solid state are known to depend strongly on fibre orientation and fibre length which, in turn, are strongly influenced by the flow of the mixture in the molten state. A knowledge of the flow characteristics of short fibre-reinforced thermoplastics in the molten state as a function of the characteristics of the components is now very much needed. Two special rheometers have been constructed for investigating the flow of these composite melts in channels of rectangular and circular cross-section. They enable study of the effect of channel length, diameter, gap thickness and entrance conditions. Quantitative results illustrating the influence of fibres on the flow are discussed in view of their use for design purpose.

Analysis of published data on sea floor spreading for the different oceans demonstrates a close correlation between interruptions of spreading at sea and compressive periods on land and between periods of spreading activity and periods of “no compression” of the orogenic regions. The evolution of both orogenic and oceanic areas appears to be rhythmic. The model is generalized to a dynamic model for the Earth's crust in which periods of global compression and extension follow alternately. Such a model fits better the geological evidences from orogenic regions than the present model for sea floor spreading which postulates an expansion in the mid ocean ridges and a compression along the continental margins underthrusted by oceanic crust.

A variable-temperature, proton noise-decoupled, 13 C nmr spectral study of the chair-chair interconversion in 1,1,3,3-tetramethylcyclohexane has demonstrated the utility of 13 C spectra for probing conformational equilibria. There is a much larger chemical-shift difference between the carbons of axial and equatorial methyl groups than between the protons of these methyl groups, 133 Hz compared to 7.5 Hz. Comparison of the activation parameters determined from the 13 C spectra of 1,1,3,3-tetramethylcyclohexane with those determined from a variable-temperature 19 F study on 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1,1-difluorocyclohexane shows that the introduction of a gem -difluoro group into the ring causes significant steric interactions. The 13 C chemical shifts for 1,1,3,3-tetramethylcyclohexane reflect the importance of the methyl-methyl 1,3-diaxial interactions.

L'etude par RMN de la rotation autour de la liaison PN dans diverses aminophosphines permet de mettre en evidence l';influence des substituants lies au phosphore sur les valeurs de ΔG*. Le parallelisme observe entre la barriere a la rotation et la grandeur des couplages 3J(PNCH) montre que les variations de ΔG* refletent principalement l'importance du recouvrement pπ—dπ. Une etude de la nucleophilie de l'azote, par reaction d'echange aprotique entre le trifluoroacetate de methyle et diverses aminophosphines, confirme ces conclusions. The ΔG* values for the barrier to rotation around the PN bond have been determined in some aminophosphines and are dependent on the substituents bound to the phosphorus atom. The comparison between 3J(PNCH) and ΔG* values indicates that pπ—dπ overlapping between nitrogen and phosphorus is the main effect. The nucleophilic behaviour of the nitrogen atom has been measured by the rate of the chemical exchange between methyl-trifluoroacetate and various aminophosphines: the results of this kinetic study are in good agreement with the NMR conclusions.

A simple theoretical treatment of certain large elastic deformations of a symmetrical network of cords embedded in rubber is explained. The calculations are based on the main assumptions of thin, inextensible and incompressible cords and a rubber behaving like a Neo-Hookean solid. This model, although simple, respects the physical characteristics of certain cord reinforced components which would be designed for large deformations. Calculations for the simple extension of the composite material, the two-dimensional extension and its application to the inflation of tubes, are compared to experiments with reasonable success. Theoretical predictions are made for related problems of the behavior of tubes in contact with plates.

A model theory was used to calculate isointensity contours describing the light scattering envelopes of a collection of anisotropic rods for the H v andV v scattering modes. The rods were assumed to lie in a plane perpendicular to the incident light beam and only intrarod interference was considered. The influence of several factors on the theoretical scattering pattern was investigated: uniaxial and biaxial orientation of rods, anisotropy of the rods, rod polarisability with respect to that of the surrounding medium, and rod length with respect to the wavelength of the light. The theoretical predictions were confirmed using a model system consisting of condenser paper imbibed with liquids of varying refractive index.

The peculiar behavior of thermoplastic elastomers in molding suggested that the processing steps (mainly shearing) to which the material had been submitted had a great influence on the morphology. Experiments were carried out on two polysstyrene-polybutadiene-polystyrene elastomers. The effects of melt-shearing and cooling were examined both by mechanical testing and low angle X-ray scattering. Melt-shearing creates a marked morphological anisotropy but a form of annealing can occur at sufficiently high temperatures.
