It is true that there are a vast number of techniques that can be used in computer simulation. For validation, each of these requires its own individual method of verification. The compounding of these techniques makes verification of the total simulation often approach the impossible. However, this does not eliminate simulation as a very valuable methodology for performing systems analysis. The report presents an example of a simulation that can be shown to produce accurate results by verifying its output in two stages. First an analytic solution is derived for a constrained version of the simulation. Then that portion of the simulation that had to be eliminated in order to test the analytic solution is tested separately. By inference, this method of verification can be used on much more complicated simulation models by subdividing them into simpler models each of which can be verified independently.

It has previously been noted that guinea pigs protected against many times the lethal dose of GD by pre-treatment with a carbamate, supported by atropine therapy, has virtually no measurable acetylcholinesterase activity in the brain although the animals appeared normal. The object of the present investigation was to establish whether animals surviving poisoning by GD were normal, mentally and physically. Since behavioural studies cannot be done with guinea pigs, a dose schedule was devised to protect rats (which are resistant to organophosphate poisoning and also resistant to therapy for that poisoning) against GD poisoning. The animals retained about 10% of the brain acetylcholinesterase activity 24 hours after poisoning. Significant change in the behaviour of the animals was observed 48 and 96 hours after poisoning. The rats appeared to be fully recovered 14 days after poisoning. The regeneration of brain acetylcholinesterase activity to within the normal limits occurred within 6 to 8 weeks. Plasma and erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase activity, which was depressed to a similar extent to brain 24 hours after poisoning recovered very much more rapidly. The implications of these results are discussed.

The implications of the worldwide environmental movement as they impact upon the Army are examined. Strengths and weaknesses of the current Army Environmental Program are discussed. The environment as a strategic issue affecting military operations abroad is analyzed. Assuming that the world is in an ecocrisis, several environmental scenarios involving possible military intervention are postulated. Civic action programs, base development planning, and environmental assessment of military operations offer peacetime opportunities for the military strategist to participate actively and constructively in the Army Environmental Program.

The author discusses the national policy for use of chemical warfare agents, the necessity for a viable CW capability and the requirements for a viable US deterrent.

Normal and accelerated storage tests showed that the materials of the Coverall CW Protective would remain in serviceable condition for at least five years of storage under temperate conditions. Deterioration of the chemical barrier in hot and humid conditions was attributed to hydrolysis of polyurethane. Packaging to protect the materials from atmospheric pollutants and high humidity is discussed. Tests of the moisture-proof, dehydrated, packaging specified for this item showed that it was adequate to ensure satisfactory storage under adverse conditions. The feasibility of preparing garments for packaging by oven-drying was established. (Author)

Object: The object of project A 10.2 is to determine the toxicities of standard and proposed chemical warfare agents. The object of the work described in this report was to determine the LC 50 of cyanogen chloride for rabbits exposed 2 minutes and observed 10 days. Results: The LC 50 of cyanogen chloride for rabbits exposed 2 minutes has been determined. Conclusion: The LC 50 of cyanogen chloride for rabbits exposed for two minutes and observed for 10 days is estimated to be 7.1 mg/l.

Object: The object of project A 10.2 is to determine the toxicities of standard and proposed chemical warfare agents. The object of the work described in this report was to determine the LC 50 of cyanogen chloride for goats exposed for 2 min. and observed for 15 days. Results: Thirty goats were exposed for 2 min. to various concentrations of cyanogen chloride. Conclusions: The LC 50 of cyanogen chloride for goats exposed 2 min. and observed 15 days is approximately 1.8 m/l.
