Crystal evaluation as it applies to instrumentation employed in X-ray astronomy is reviewed, and some solutions are offered to problems that are commonly encountered. A general approach for selecting the most appropriate crystals for a given problem is also suggested. The energy dependence of the diffraction properties of (002) PET, (111) Ge, (101) ADP, (101) KAP, and (001) RAP are reported.

The modified structure method, which is based on Koiter's theory of imperfections, was used to calculate approximate buckling loads of several shells of revolution. The method does not appear to be practical for shells because, in many cases, the prebuckling nonlinearity may be too large to be treated accurately as a small imperfection.

A FORTRAN 4 digital computer program is presented for the initial postbuckling and imperfection sensitivity analysis of bifurcation buckling modes for ring-stiffened orthotropic multilayered shells of revolution. The boundary value problem for the second-order contribution to the buckled state was solved by the forward integration technique using the Runge-Kutta method. The effects of nonlinear prebuckling states and live pressure loadings are included.

Structures Research Associates (SRA) system of programs is composed of six compatible computer programs for structural analyses of axisymmetric shell structures. Theories and methods upon which these programs are based are presented in documentation. They apply to a common structural model but analyze different modes of structural response.

The 'field method' for the numerical solution of even-order linear boundary-value problems in ordinary differential equations is formulated. This method converts the boundary-value problem into two successive initial-value problems, which may be solved by standard forward integration techniques. The method has been implemented in a computer program to calculate the static response of ring-stiffened branched shells of revolution to asymmetric loads. For such problems the field method eliminates the well-known numerical problem of 'long subintervals' and also executes operations significantly faster than other numerical integration methods.

The field method is developed for arbitrary open branch domains subjected to general linear boundary conditions. Although closed branches are within the scope of the method, they are not treated here. The numerical feasibility of the method has been demonstrated by implementing it in a computer program for the linear static analysis of open branch shells of revolution under asymmetric loads. For such problems the field method eliminates the well-known numerical problem of long subintervals associated with the rapid growth of extraneous solutions. Also, the method appears to execute significantly faster than other numerical integration methods.

The equations and method of solution for a series of five compatible computer programs for structural analysis of axisymmetric shell structures are presented. These programs, designated as the SRA programs, apply to a common structural model but analyze different modes of structural response. They are: (1) linear asymmetric static response (SRA 100), (2) buckling of linearized asymmetric equilibrium states (SRA 101), (3) nonlinear axisymmetric static response (SRA 200), (4) buckling of nonlinear axisymmetric equilibrium states(SRA 201), and (5) vibrations about nonlinear axisymmetric equilibrium state (SRA 300).

The buckling modes of four optimized Mars entry aeroshell configurations at angle-of-attack loadings have been calculated. The analysis is based on experimental pressure distributions and was performed with the aid of a buckling digital computer program which treats general asymmetric linearized prebuckling states of branched shells of revolution. Only zero and first harmonic pressure components are treated, these being constructed from windward and leeward meridian pressure data at a mach number of 4.63. The results showed a rather small effect of the unsymmetrical pressure component on buckling for angles of attack up to 15 deg. Comparison of the results for the 120 deg cones to previous results indicates that the common procedure of basing the design on a symmetrized pressure distribution of the windward meridian is a conservative approach.

A user manual and related program documentation is presented for six compatible computer programs for structural analysis of axisymmetric shell structures. The programs apply to a common structural model but analyze different modes of structural response. In particular, they are: (1) Linear static response under asymmetric loads; (2) Buckling of linear states under asymmetric loads; (3) Nonlinear static response under axisymmetric loads; (4) Buckling nonlinear states under axisymmetric (5) Imperfection sensitivity of buckling modes under axisymmetric loads; and (6) Vibrations about nonlinear states under axisymmetric loads. These programs treat branched shells of revolution with an arbitrary arrangement of a large number of open branches but with at most one closed branch.
