President Roosevelt sends Dora Cleveland his deepest sympathy for the recent death of her son, Melvin L. Cleveland. Melvin fell overboard into the Potomac River while part of a naval procession welcoming Roosevelt back to the Washington area on November 26, 1906. Roosevelt tells her he will see if anything further can be done about the situation.

Huckeby, a farm worker, entered the Red River above the dam near the X on the right, was swept over the dam into the churning water. Edward Goff left his car and ran into the river about where the cross shows at lower right and attempted to rescue the swimmer. There was a struggle about at the X on the left. Chester Moe, Fargo, who was fishing threw a fishline from about the point of the arrow to the men but it snappes as Goff grabbed the line. This photograph was published in the La Crosse Tribune on June 5, 1965. The photograph's caption reads: "La Crosse firemen (in boat at left) recovered the body of nine-year-old David Jansky Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. David Jansky, 1616 1/2 West Ave. S., Saturday at 9:43 p.m. The boy was drowned after he fell from a houseboat in Bluff slough west of the State Office Building off Highway 14. It was reported in Sunday's Tribune that Mrs. Jansky, although she jumped in the water in an effort to save her son, couldn't swim. She reported Monday that she did know how to swim."
