15. X-ray observations of characteristic structures and time variations from the solar corona - Preliminary results from Skylab.

Abstract

Examples taken from the S-054 X-ray telescope observations made during the first Skylab mission show the hot coronal plasma tracing the configuration of the magnetic fields. The high spectral resolution and sensitivity of the instrument has enabled the following two facts to be more firmly established: (1) that the 'quiet homogeneous corona' is in fact highly structured and that the structures observed appear to be the results of dispersed active region magnetic fields; and (2) that numerous bright points are distributed randomly on the disk. Their presence at high latitudes may play a role in solar cycle models. In addition, the capability of Skylab for studying time evolution has enabled the restructuring of coronal features to be seen at times of high activity, indicating a restructuring of the coronal magnetic fields.

Abstract

The research in high resolution solar X-ray astronomy is reported. The payload for the Aerobee 150 launch vehicle, which included a 23 cm diameter mirror whose polished surface was a nickel-phosphorus alloy is discussed along with the high resolution measurements, by Flight 13.028 CS, of the temperature and density structure of the lower corona. Flight 13.029 CS is also discussed.

17. Investigation of substrate-mounted thin-film meteoroid sensors for use in large area impact experiments

Abstract

Two types of sensor designs were investigated: (1)a polysulfone dielectric film with vapor-deposited aluminum and gold sensor plates, bonded to a relatively thick aluminum substrate, and (2) an aluminum oxide (A1203) dielectric layer prepared on an aluminum substrate by anodization, with a layer of vapor-deposited aluminum providing one sensor plate and the substrate serving as the other plate. In the first design, specimens were prepared which indicate the state of the art for application of this type of sensor for elements of a meteoroid detection system having an area as large as 10 sq M. Techniques were investigated for casting large-area polysulfone films on the surface of water and for transferring the films from the water. Methods of preparing sensors by layering of films, the deposition of capacitor plates, and sensor film-to-substrate bonding, as well as techniques for making electrical connections to the capacitor plates, were studied.

Abstract

Barker, Dembo and Lewin (BDL) classic study of frustration and regression has been widely discussed in psychological literature. Researchers have reinterpreted the experiment and have come to conclusions which differ from that of the original authors. In the present paper further analysis of the data will be presented in an attempt to evaluate the two interpretations. BDL feel that psychological development can be characterized by structural changes in the life space such that there is increased differentiation of the person into subsystems and a change of organization of the person.

36. CARCINOMA OF THE PROSTATE PRESENTING AS DISEASE OF THE RECTUM.

Abstract

SUMMARY 1. Sixteen cases of carcinoma of the prostate which presented as disease of the rectum are described. 2. They are divided into three clinical types: rectal stricture; anterior submucous mass; rectal ulcer. 3. The importance of differentiating advanced carcinoma of the rectum from carcinoma of the prostate invading the rectum is stressed because of the different forms of treatment. 4. The methods of diagnosis are discussed and emphasis is placed on the value of rectal biopsy. 5. The difficulties of distinguishing between the histological diagnosis of anaplastic prostatic and anaplastic rectal carcinoma are discussed. 6. 40. An Electron-microscope Study of the Response of Mesothelial Cells to the Intrapleural Injection of Asbestos Dust

Abstract

Studies of the pleural mesothelium in rats, mice, and guinea-pigs following the intrapleural injection of asbestos dust, showed that for 6 months at least this dust did not induce mesothelial hyperplasia. During the first few days after injection some areas of mesothelial cells became rounded and less clearly attached to one another, and a few were found to contain small numbers of asbestos fibres. During this period there was evidence of the penetration of asbestos fibres between the mesothelial cells, into the submesothelial connective tissues. Later in the studies the mesothelium covering most of the pleural cavity returned to normal, but where mesothelium covered asbestos granulomata, the cells were found to be extremely flattened, and without surface microvilli. Usually the mesothelial covering was complete, but in some areas pores were found penetrating the mesothelial cell cytoplasm and leaving areas of connective tissue in direct contact with the pleural cavity. In a few cases mesothelial cells were found lining clefts within the connective tissue of asbestos granulomata.

42. The Calcification of Fibrous Pleural Lesions Produced in Guinea Pigs by the Injection of Chrysotile Asbestos Dust*

Abstract

In guinea-pig pleural granulomas produced by the injection of chrysotile asbestos dust, the initial cellular lesions were replaced by old acellular fibrous tissue within 15-18 months. After this period calcification of the fibrous tissue commonly occurred. The first sign of calcification was always the formation among the collagen fibres of large numbers of spherical lamellated bodies. These structures stained positive for acid mucopolysaccharides, and electron-microscope observations showed that they were formed around a core of asbestos dust. Calcium in the form of apatite crystals was also often present in these structures. Shortly after the formation of lamellar bodies the mucopolysaccharide normally present on the collagen fibres, was removed and instead it formed a thick coating around any free asbestos dust in the fibrous area. The first signs of general calcium deposition were seen both in contact with collagen fibres and on the surface of the coated asbestos dust. Eventually calcium deposits filled all the tissue spaces and enclosed collagen, coated asbestos dust and lamellar bodies in a solid mass of calcification.

Abstract

The San Francisco Vessel Traffic System (VTS) was conceived as an automated complex that would free the system operators of all routine tasks, permitting them to concentrate on situations requiring human intervention. Accordingly, a radar detection system has been designed to automatically acquire and track all vessels within a defined surveillance region covering the San Francisco Bay and seaward approach to the Golden Gate. The report describes the two major elements comprising the automatic detection and tracking system: a Radar Video Preprocessor (RVP) and a radar computer. (Modified author abstract)

48. STUDY OF TANDEM ROTOR HELICOPTER DYNAMICS FOLLOWING POWER FAILURE AT HIGH SPEED

Abstract

The report covers a parametric study of tandem rotor helicopter dynamics following power failure at high speed (200 knots plus). It was concluded that complete loss of power on a high-speed helicopter results in hazardous flight conditions. Installation of auxiliary propulsion and incorporation of high-inertia rotor blades greatly relieve the situation by increasing the time available for the pilot to initiate recovery. Installation of a collective pitch rate limiter and an engine failure warning horn are recommended, to assist the pilot in taking corrective action. Provided collective pitch inputs are limited to safe values, no serious problems arise in the structural design of rotor blades to meet the conditions encountered in recovery from high-speed power failure. Dualization of engines and fuel systems provides an adequate margin of safety against sudden and complete power failure.
