The report describes a program to develop, design, and fabricate an integrated chamber aerosol assessment system. Its primary application will be in the area of testing and evaluation of the dissemination of chemical agents in which the mass concentration and chemical and physical properties of the aerosol clouds must be defined accurately to predict aerodynamic transport and physiological effects. For optimum utilization, sensor outputs are to be integrated and automated insofar as practical with the added requirement that all measurements relate to real time. During this period, theoretical approaches for measurement of aerosol electrical charge effects were developed and preliminary instrumental calibrations and measurements were performed. A discussion of proposed scaling factors to be used as guides in maintaining stirred settling in chambers, irrespective of size, is also presented. The relationship between aerosol sampling and size assessment techniques and the bioeffectiveness of chemical agents is discussed. Studies were continued on mathematical inversions of mass decay data and the analysis of organophosphorous compounds by flame photometry. (Author)

This report describes the work accomplished during the sixth quarter of a program to develop, design, and fabricate a complete chamber aerosol assessment system. Its primary application will be in the area of testing and evaluating methods of disseminating chemical agents in which the mass concentration and chemical and physical properties of the aerosol clouds must be defined accurately to predict aerodynamic transport and physiological effects. For optimum utilization, sensor outputs are to be integrated and automated insofar as practical with the added requirement that all measurements relate to real time. During this period, program objectives, future work schedules and instrument selections were reviewed with Edgewood Arsenal representatives. Studies were continued on methods of inverting mass decay data for predicting particle size and on the analysis of organophosphates by flame photometry. Investigations were started on the effects of electrostatic phenomena on aerosol assessment and on methods of characterizing particle size in relation to physiological effects. (Author)

A 50 lb/hr incinerator for the concentration of low-level radioactive combustible waste was designed and fabricated. This experimental unit was designed to investigate the effects of varying (1) the location, number, and orientation of overfire air inlets, (2) the inlet velocity and mass flow rate of primary and secondary combustion air, and (3) the auxiliary gas fuel supply to the primary and secondary combustion chambers. After optimum performance conditions are established, radioactive tracers will be utilized to evaluate the radiological limits of the unit, and actual radioactive waste will be incinerated. Experimental equipment will be eliminated in a final prototype design. Gas cleaning equipment, which will be required to maintain control of the release of radioactivity within federal regulations, will consist of conventionally manufactured stock items. (Author)

Further work on a solid film lubricant testing apparatus designed and built by M. M. Sampsel was carried out. A power supply was constructed and a sputtered gold film applied to various portions of the apparatus. A torsion bridge was installed and calibrated to determine tooth contact forces. Calibration of strain gages installed to determine tooth radial forces was attempted but difficulties were encountered in determining a strain reading for the unstressed condition. Based on this work, recommendations for design changes were made.
