Resume As model reactions pertaining to the syntheses of carpaine, cassine and related alkaloids, various 2,6-dialkyl 3-piperidinols were prepared and their stereochemistry established by NMR and IR spectroscopy. The colorimetric procedure outlined by Johnson was followed with some modifications for the analysis of carbaryl residues in corn. Recoveries from fortified samples were 77.2-99.3%. Carbaryl applied as granules in furrows at planting was translocated to the leaves. Carbaryl in the root and leaf was 16.25–27.50 and 17.24–27.62 ppm, respectively, 35 days after application. When applied as a water-suspension spray, 1.04 ppm carbaryl was detected in the leaves 21 days after application. It was not detectable in grain, stover, or silk, although 0.86 ppm was found in husks. In winter, 8.57 ppm carbaryl was detected 60 days after application. It was not detected in grain, stover, silk, and inner husks, but wrapper husks contained 24.23 ppm 27 days after application. more...

The relative basicities of the various 2-methyl hetero­cyclic compounds have been evaluated from the C = 0 absorption frequency of merocyanines. College, Sambalpur Manuscript received 5 April 1974; accepted 26 July 1975 Condensation of benzoyl acetic ester and \(p\)-nitro benzoyl acetic ester with phenyl hydrazine furnished 1, 3-diphenyl pyrozolone and 1-phenyl 3-\(p\)-nitro phenyl pyrazolone respectively. These pyrazolones have been used to synthesise several merocyanines and arylidene derivatives under different conditions and the latter have been brominated to dibromo compounds. Also orange coloured azo dyes have been prepared from them after coupling them with diazotised sulpha­nilamide. Both the keto-methylene compounds (thiohydantoin and thiazolidone) have been used to prepare several arylidene deri­vatives and dibromo compounds. The thioureas have also been used to prepare 5,5-diphenyl 3-(4'-aryl thiazole 2'-yl) thiohydantoins (IX) with benzil. Department of Chemistry, Ravenshaw College, Utkal University, Cuttack Manuscript received 9 November 1972; accepted 30 December 1972 A dozen new 2-aryl substituted imino-3-aryl substituted -4-methyl-∆4-thiazolines (I) has been synthesised by condensation of acetone with different sym. diaryl substituted thioureas in presence of bromine, which is used as the condensing agent. The ∆4-thiazolines have been mer­curated by treatment with one equivalent of mercuric acetate to produce the corresponding mono acetoxy mercuric thiazolines (II). The mercurated as well as the unmercurated ∆4-thiazolines have been tested for their fungicidal activity using \(Helminthosporium\) \(Oryzete\) as the test fungus. The results of the fungicidal assay are quite satisfactory. more...
