The article proposes that generalized concepts of ecological adaptation can be utilized to examine man's adaptation to vigorous sport environments. Among the concepts examined are inputs that produce stress, the compensatory adjustments or effector outputs made within an organism or system to restore equilibrium, and the complexity of such adaptive readjustments. Three periods of adaptation are outlined: the Period of Acute Stress, the Period of Adaptation to Chronic Stress, and the Period of Declining Adaptation.
