A method of hemocultures was used to study the hemopoietic activity of the serum of the blood flowing from the spleen, liver, kidney, stomach, and small intestine, as well as of that taken from the femoral artery and vein prior to and during 20 h after the stimulation by single massive blood-letting in dogs.

Abstract

The concentration of cyclic adenosine-3′,5′-monophosphate (cyclic AMP) in the plasma of blood donors (10 regular, 28 first time) was investigated by the competitive protein binding method on the day before donation and shortly after the removal of 20 ml blood. Two types of responses of the donors to donation were established: with no change and with a change in the cyclic AMP level. In accordance with these responses the donors were conventionally divided into two subgroups-“stable” and “reactive.” The cyclic AMP level in the regular donors was higher than in the primary, and at the time of taking the blood it was increased still more, especially among the subjects of “reactive” type. The cyclic AMP concentration in first-time donors of reactive type was either lower or higher than the mean value on the day before donation, and at the time of bleeding it rose or fell respectively to the mean level.

Abstract

The object of study was the degree of excretion of 5-ribosyluracil (pseudouridine) in 8 healthy subjects and in 8 cancer patients before and after local x-ray irradiation. In healthy men the diurnal excretion of pseudouridine with urine is 56.0 mg on the average. In patients with lung and esophageal cancer the average amount of pseudouridine excretion with urine is close to normal, but there are large individual variations. Single local exposure to x-rays, in a dose of 100 R practically fails to influence the degree of pseudouridine excretion, while multiple local x-irradiation of cancer patients in a total dose of 1800 R leads to an increase in pseudouridine excretion with urine by 100% on the average.

5. [Psychophysiological characteristics of the performance of a suited operator].

Abstract

The performance of a suited operator was studied. The experiments were carried out in a trainer consisting of a cockpit and electronic model of the plane attitude realized by an Electron analogue computer. The experiments showed that a special suit may decrease the performance. The main cause for that is that under positive pressure the influx of afferent signals impoverishes due to a reduction of proprioceptive feedback. This disturbs the interaction of the optic and motor analyzers. In order to increase the performance of a suited pilot, it is necessary to build the construction maintaining the optic-proprioceptive relation.

Abstract

Experiments were conducted on sterile and contaminated guinea pigs. The toxicity of the serum and the water-salt extracts of the internal organs after the burn was studied by the action on the leukocyte migration in a culture. Despite the complete absence of the microbial flora, the toxic properties of the serum and of the extracts of the internal organs of the sterile animals were the same as in the contaminated organs. The data obtained pointed to the important role of the histiogenic factors in the development of burn intoxication.

Abstract

The method of competitive protein binding was applied to the study of content of cyclic adenosine-3',5'-monophosphate (cAMP) in donor plasma one day before and immediately after the donation of 200 ml of blood. The work was performed by Gilman's radiochemical method. Two types of reaction of donors to donorship were revealed: without any changes and with the changes of the cAMP level. In accordance with these reactions the donors were divided into two subgroups--the stable and the reactive ones. In repeated donors the cAMP level was higher than in the primary ones, and the reactive ones. In repeated donors the cAMP level was higher than in the primary ones, and at the time of blood recovery it increased even more particularly among persons of "reactive" type. In primary donors of reactive type the cAMP content before the blood donation was either below or over the mean value and either increased or decreased to the mean level after the blood loss.
