The concept of purpose underlies the development of the Information System for Vocational Decisions (ISVD), which incorporates a computer-based interactive information system intended to facilitate realization of purpose. This report clarifies the psychological theory of the ISVD in a discussion of the evaluation of individual purpose and the nature and dynamics of purposeful action. (BH)

Forty-eight motion picture films and filmstrips in the field of marine science are catalogued in this booklet. Following the alphabetical index, one page is devoted to each film indicating its type, producer, recommended grade level, running time, and presence of color and/or sound. A summary of film content, possible uses, and outstanding features are enumerated. In addition, mention is made of over three hundred 35 mm slides of marine life forms and habitat available from the Center. This work was prepared under an ESEA Title III Contract. (BL)

This is a further clarification of the psychological theory underlying the Information System for Vocational Decisions (ISVD), a prototypic, computer-based, interactive, information quidance system, which is intended to facilitate the realization of purpose. The basic purpose paradigm herein comceptualized consists of a description, largely in terms of information theory, of a phenomenon labeled "ideal behavior." Such behavior maximizes the probability of future outcomes which would be both adaptive and satisfying. Two further requirements are delineated: (1) the more information involved in a decision to act, the more predictable the result of the action; and (2) such information as guides an individual's behavior must have been evolved and integrated into a system of goal and feedback by that individual. The bulk of the report then discusses some ways in which such evolution and integration might be developed, and how a purpose mechanism might operate, given that necessary information had been learned. The 73 participants representing 10 health professions, health education at all levels, and federal and state agencies attended a 2-day conference which attempted to reinforce communication among allied health practitioners in the utilization of the allied health assistant in the delivery of health care. Major issue papers, which provided discussion ideas for multi-disciplinary workshops, were: (1) "Health Manpower and the Health Crisis" by K. M. Endicott, (2) "The Assistant: Mobile or Immobile?" by J. W. Perry, (3) "The Assistant's Basic Education" by Sister A. Joachim, (4) "The Need: Who? When? Where?" by L. M. Detmer, and (5) "Certification and Licensure: Blessing or Boondoggle?" by E. E. Leuallen. Needs of selected disciplines were also recognized, and these become the major area of concentration in the panels and disciplinary workshops. Texts of the major papers and workshop notes are included in the report. (SB)

Facilitation of learning depends upon a synergistic relationship among administrators, instructors, and learners, each of whom responds to educational technology in one or more of the following alternative ways: (1) he is ignorant of technology; (2) he ignores technology; (3) he acknowledges the existence of technology but condemns it as mechanistic and inhumane; (4) he acknowledges the existence of technology, recognizes its potential, but avoids it as mysterious, complex, and unmanageable; (5) he accepts and uses technology uncritically; (6) he accepts and uses technology critically, imaginatively, and accountably; (7) he accepts, uses, and assists others in using technology critically, imaginatively, and accountably; or (8) he develops and improves technology. Exercising the more positive alternatives in educational technology can result in helping learners to learn more in less time with greater ease and confidence. (TO)

The purpose of this handbook is to outline the general aims and objectives of a junior high school, describe the major activities of its guidance program, and show, by examples, how activities can be practically integrated into the program. The introductory chapter includes the definition, need, and objectives of the guidance program, including the team approach used and the pupil-counselor ratio. The need, objectives, contents, and evaluation of orientation programs comprise Chapter Two. Chapter Three focuses on testing. The chapter on Information Services includes a discussion of various types and sources of information. Group guidance is discussed, followed by a chapter on counseling, which includes guidelines on the counseling process, timing, goals, and types. A brief chapter on evaluation is followed by a discussion and suggestions for working with students who have special problems. A junior high school guidance calendar is suggested. (KP)

As an informative text for a three-week unit in marine science for grade six, it considers man's role in using coastal resources and how he affects the marine environments. An ecological approach to nature is emphasized, stressing the ties between culture, economy, and resource use. Topics are divided into three units: Food and Recreation, Transportation, and Minerals and Conservation. Each unit includes a vocabulary, fill-in questions, and disucssion topics. The objectives, methods, strategies, content, and resources utilized in this high school course are described in this report. A chronological, topical, interdisciplinary approach is taken toward subject matter ranging from African Antecedents, through The Civil War and Reconstruction, to The Black Revolution. In addition to the general aims of social studies education, such as critical thinking, objectivity, and democratic values, this course is intended to provide an understanding and appreciation of the role of black people in American development. Such strategies as discovery learning, problem solving, active student participation in group and individual projects are employed in achieving these objectives. A typical unit lists reference works, text assignments, suggestions for supplemental reading, audiovisual material, outline of content, and questions for discussion which stress inductive methods and encourage the student to relate generalizations to contemporary social phenomena.
