An apparatus is described in which a ruby-pumped dye laser is used to induce transitions from the 2S to the 2P levels of the muonic ion (μHe)+. The dye laser supplies infra-red radiation pulses in the wavelengths (8040÷8180) A, at typical repetition rates of 1 pulse every 4 s, with an energy release per pulse of 300 mJ for 1.2 J pumping

Pionic X-rays have been observed when negative pions are stopped in a hydrogen gas target. The intensity of the K lines has been found to be about 0.12 X-ray/pion stopped; moreover we found K α /K = 0.53 ± 0.04.

We descril'e here an assembly target-X-ray detector that is particularly suitable for detecting muonic and pionic X-rays in the range 1.3–10 keV. Some of the main features of the system are described.

The sensitivity of mouse myeloma γG globulins to enzymatic proteolysis has been investigated under several experimental conditions. γG1 was found to be more resistant to papain or tryptic cleavage than γG2d and γG2b. Minor differences were found between the reactivities of the latter two proteins. γG2b showed extremely high sensitivity to the action of pepsin. The addition of cysteine to the incubation mixtures of globulins with papain or trypsin enhanced the degree of fragmentation, but some physical and immunochemical properties of these fragments were found to be different from those of fragments obtained in the absence of cysteine. The possible role of this reducing agent has been discussed.

An experiment is described aiming to measure a possible polarizationP of the protons recoiling in e-p collisions for a four-momentum transferq2=20 fermi−2. The e-p elastic collisions were detected by observing the scattered electrons and the recoiling protons in coincidence; the polarizationP was deduced by measuring the left-right asymmetry in the scattering of the recoiling protons in the carbon plates of a spark-chamber. The result ofP=0.024±0.050 is consistent with theoretical estimates that the imaginary part of the scattering amplitude arising from the exchange of two photons between the electron and the proton is negligible.

Antibodies to the papain-sensitive antigenic determinants of mouse myeloma γG globulins were produced in guinea pigs. These antibodies could be used to identify isotypic markers on globulins of different subclasses. Immunochemical analyses of globulin fragments obtained by different proteolytic enzymes indicated that amino acid residues located both near to the site of papain cleavage and on the Fc participate in the expression of the papain-sensitive antigenic determinants.

Spectra have been measured of protons, deutrons and tritons emitted following the capture of negative pions in 4 He. The proton spectrum agrees with existing calculations but the deuteron spectrum does not.

Reductive cleavage and partial proteolysis of 17·6 S mouse plasmacytoma γM globulin were studied. Mild reductive cleavage resulted in a 6·0 S subunit. Three different Fab-related fragments (5·5 S, 3·9 S and 2·5 S) were produced by peptid proteolysis. Most of the protein remained unsplit after treatment with papain without cystein, while a 3·4 S Fabμ fragment was produced by papain in the presence of 0·01 M cysteine. Trypsin cleaved the protein into a 3·0 S Fab μ-related fragment and a heavy, 14 S fragment. When tryptic digestion was performed in the presence of 0·01 M cysteine, only a 2·8 S Fabμ-related fragment was identified in the digest.

Abstract A simplified method for the optimization of the exploitation of gas reservoirs based on technical and economic considerations has been developed. It predicts the present-worth value profit of a project by the use of a functional relationship between pertinent variables. The optimization of the exploitation of a gas field is indicated by the maximum present-worth value of the profit when the rate of production and the number of wells are optimized. The optimum number of wells is to be considered as the optimum drilling program since, besides the number of wells, the optimum timing of the drilling program is also predicted. In order to allow a general use of this method, a dimensionless relationship was written and plotted in graphical form. By the use of this graph, simply knowing the so-called C "payout time" 0 =, the optimum rate qiL 365 of production and the optimum drilling program are quickly obtainable. The uncertainties on the reliability of reservoir data in the early life of a field have been corrected by the use of a risk factor. The importance of this risk factor is shown by the higher sensibility of the profit-to-investment ratio. A sample calculation is given at the end of the paper for a better understanding of the rapidity of the method. Introduction In recent years the sales of natural gas and associated products increased commensurate with the increase of energy consumption. This has been evidenced by more intensive exploration and exploitation of deep and low-permeability gas reservoirs, which before were considered uneconomic. Although reservoir engineering methods for analyzing and predicting the performance of gas reservoirs and gas wells have long been available, it appears that these methods must be applied with economic criteria early in the history of the reservoir in order to give a usable tool for quick and sound decision-making on investment. The aim of this paper is to develop a simplified procedure for fast and accurate prediction of gas production and drilling program in optimum operating conditions.
