A number of polyelectrolytes—histones, polyamino acids, synthetic polymers—have shown strong adjuvant activity with diphtheria and tetanus toxoids In contrast to the long chain aliphatic compounds, among which only cationic members are active, several anionic polyelectrolytes were found to be effective. Abstract

By the use of diphtheria toxoid in guinea-pigs, high adjuvant activity has been found in a number of aliphatic nitrogenous bases including amines, quaternary ammonium compounds, guanidines, benzamidines and thiouroniums. Activity appears to depend on a combination of basicity and a long aliphatic chain of twelve or more carbon atoms. Such adjuvants tend to be haemolytic, and cause damage to tissue culture monolayers. It is suggested that their activity is connected with their surface activity and hence their ability to alter cell membranes, but that the basicity plays a further as yet undetermined role. 5. Immuno-Electrophoresis of Antitoxic Sera using a Wide Range of Antigen-Antibody Ratios.

Abstract

The method of Scheidegger (1955) has been used to investigate antitoxic sera over a wide range of toxin/antitoxin ratios. Sets of twelve replicate electrophoresis runs, using constant amounts of serum, are performed in agar gel on microscope slides, and the electrophoresed sera then allowed to react with twelve dilutions of toxin ranging from 1/1 to 1/5000. In this way ratios at or near equivalence are obtained for each of the several components in a multiple system. By making use of various toxin preparations, and of sera of differing in vivo antitoxic titre, observations on the equivalence ratios for the various components have led to their identification, and enabled comparisons to be made between different sera both qualitatively and semi-quantitatively. The influence of antigen/antibody ratio on the character of the precipitin line, and on the effects of temperature changes during development, is re-examined. The type of agar used has been found to affect the position of the electrophoretic components and therefore of the lines of precipitate. The identification of the major components of the diphtheria system is described. Antibody appears to be widely distributed throughout the electrophorefic fractions of horse sera, and there is no evidence to suggest that different antigenic components of diphtheria toxin call forth antibodies of different electrophorefic mobility. In recent years impressive advances have been made in understanding viral gastroenteritis. A specific causative agent has been identified in infants and young children, and studies of a similar but distinct enteritis in piglets have given new insight into the pathogenesis of viral diarrhea. This article discusses these recent findings in veterinary and human medicine.

In a substantial number of children no specific disease can be found. The various causes are discussed and the mechanisms and management of idiopathic chronic diarrhea are explored.

13. East Coast Fever: Experiments with the Tissues of Infected Ticks

Abstract

The tissues of Rhipicephalus appendiculatusinfected with Theileria parvaand fed for 312−412days were used to induce experimental East Coast fever. Freshly prepared tissues infected 76 per cent of thirty-four cattle and killed 81 per cent of these reactors. Infective tissues stored for 24 hours at 4°c before injection produced a lower number of reactors and a smaller number of infected cattle died; of fourteen inoculated six (45 per cent) reacted and two (3313per cent) of those infected, died. Neither X-irradiation nor storage at −79°c for 24 hours appeared to affect the infectivity or the virulence of the sporozoites.
