The research described on the hydrodynamic boundary layer in a fluid containing macromolecular bodies flowing in a pipe or around an obstacle covers both the rheological features of the solutions (effect of concentration, decay with time, etc.) and the effects of these polymers on flow conditions in the immediate vicinity of the walls (variation of friction-reducing hydrodynamic parameters). The presence of macromolecules in an external or internal flow affects the flow conditions. For example, the loss of head and resistance to flow are considerably reduced, sometimes bg more than 50 per cent. The results obtained in this field of research have been found to depend as much on the hydrodynamic parameters as on the rheological properties of these fluids.
