This document is an English-language abstract (approximately 1,500 words) of a study about secondary education with particular reference to students; it essentially treats the relationship between economics and education in the context of Brazilian society. From the sociological point of view; the study is characterized by concentration on certain theoretical considerations and by a specific methodological orientation. From the educational angle, it seeks to portray existing conditions accurately to serve as a basis for formulating national policy. The authors compare various urban and rural regions, and attempt to show the changes in secondary education brought on by industrialization. The chapters cover the following items: (I) general orientation and hypotheses raised, (II) description of methodology employed; (III) broad picture which emerges from statistics; (IV) to (VIII) the data for the analysis of a number of socioeconomic and psychological characteristics of the students; (IX) and (X) the labor market and the demand for middle grade personnel. The last chapter presents two analytical viewpoints in the form of a general conclusion. (Author/GDB)

Summary Blood and bone marrow cytologic studies were made on 32 cases of sleeping sickness seen in Portuguese Guinea. The blood picture of African trypanosomiasis can be summarized as follows: slight microcytic normochromic anemia, moderate leukocytosis with an increase of the monocytes and lymphocytes, and neutropenia with a shift to the left of Schilling's hemogram. The number of platelets is normal. Hemoglobin breakdown is increased, serum iron normal or elevated, normal icterus index and normal or decreased fragility of the erythrocytes. The bone marrow picture shows an increase of the erythroblastic series and a great number of immature megakaryocytes. Plasmocytes are slightly increased and Mott cells can be found.

The first formation constant β 1 of the α-hydroxy- n -valeriate systems of all the lanthanides (except Ce, Pm and Tm) and yttrium, have been determined by a potentiometric method in aqueous medium of 1·0 ionic strength (NaClO 4 ) at 25°C.

The formation constants, β1 and β2, of the lactate systems of six lanthanides (La, Pr, Gd, Dy, Er, Lu) have been determined by a potentiometric method in aqueous medium of 0·1 M ionic strength (NaClO4) at 25°C. Values of β3 have been calculated for Dy, Er and Lu.

Summary A case of a benign Abrikossoff's tumor (granular cell myoblastoma) in the upper third of the esophagus is reported. The tumor produced progressive dysphagia. Surgical excision was successful. The literature concerning Abrikossoff's tumor is reviewed.

The ultraviolet oxygen emissions at 1304 and 1356 A in the tropical nightglow seen from Ogo 4 by Hicks and Chubb (1970) and Barth and Schaffner (1970) are accompanied by emission at 7774 and 4368 A, which have been studied from the ground by looking through the beam of an ionosonde operated under the Appleton anomaly ionization peaks. Simultaneous forbidden O I 6300-A measurements were also made. A theoretical value for the partial rate coefficient for 7774 emission by radiative recombination has been obtained, and from the ionospheric data and a model atmosphere the expected rates of radiative recombination and ion-ion recombination were calculated. The time variations and absolute intensity of the calculated and observed intensities agree reasonably well, when the uncertainties involved are considered. It is concluded that radiative recombination is the major source of the tropical oxygen permitted line emissions, accompanied by a small contribution from ion-ion recombination.

Under twentieth century conditions, secondary education has two major societal functions: 1. To contribute to the economic development of the society. 2. To increase the degree of social integration of the society: the meaning of social integration is the tieing together of various social, economic and racial groups into an interacting social system in which every person has the opportunity to achieve a social and economic status which he desires if he is willing to work for it and has the requisite abilities.

Este artigo busca decifrar representações da questão racial brasileira em seu cancioneiro popular. Para tanto, empreende-se a análise de canções que tiveram considerável exibição em rádios de todo o País, elencadas entre as cem melhores colocadas em paradas de sucesso nos anos de 1956 a 2005. Delineadas tais representações, elas serão confrontadas ao arcabouço teórico sociológico existente com o objetivo de identificar possíveis pontos de convergência e de distanciamento. Ao final, espera-se que tal análise possa não apenas fornecer uma representação mínima da questão racial brasileira, mas apresentar a forma como as mudanças sociais nele ocorridas ao longo de cinquenta anos foram registradas em suas canções.
