This paper deals with the study of the pressure effects on the burning in air of large hydrocarbon fuel droplets. The traditional quasi-steady analysis fails to predict any pressure dependence of the burning rate, except a very minimal amount due to nonuniform gas properties. Experimental results of this study and others, in the range from 1–20 atm, indicate that the burning rate of liquid droplets is however dependent on the ambient pressure. An equation has been developed incorporating our observations which predict a pressure effect when the variation of the flame standoff distance with pressure is given. The pressure effect on the burning rate constant, K, appears to be small. The power law relationship is found to be proportional to p.14 for ethanol and p.11 for n-propanol.

Studies of the near ultraviolet absorption spectra of α‐, β‐, and γ‐picoline vapor have been made in low and medium dispersion. Conclusive evidence is found for two electronic transitions in the vicinities of 35500 and 38500 cm−1. The former transition is interpreted as an allowed A1—B2 transition resulting from the excitation of an sp2 nonbonding electron of the nitrogen atom into the first unfilled π‐orbital of the ring. The latter transition is considered an allowed A1—B1 transition resulting from the excitation of a π ring electron. The A1—B2 system exhibits narrow headless bands similar to the first absorption bands in pyridine. It is of weak intensity comparable to that of the forbidden A1g—B2u transition in benzene. The A1—B1 system, which is much stronger, consists of broad diffuse bands. There is evidence that this system may be overlapped by another transition in β‐picoline.

In the following reviews, Dr. J. H. Rush discusses several volumes which have recently appeared on the questions of loyalty and security. Dr. Rush, a physicist at the Harvard High Altitude Observatory at Boulder, Colorado, has for many years been active in atomic education and was secretary of the Federation of American Scientists. He was at Oak Ridge during the war.An analysis of the Forrestal Diaries is also presented here by Waiter Johnson, Chairman of the Department of History at the University of Chicago. He edited Edward Stettinius' volume, Roosevelt and the Russians: The Story of the Yalta Conference, and is editor of the forthcoming book, Turbulent Era: A Diplomatic Record of Forty Years, by Ambassador Joseph C. Grew. In 1945–46 Dr. Johnson worked intimately with the Chicago committee sponsoring the McMahon Act.

Radial distributions of $\mathrm{Ra}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{Be}$ neutrons about an approximate point source in water were determined by means of indium foil activations. Values for migration area (${M}^{2}$) derived from the data are: For all activating neutrons, 54.7 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$; for indium resonance neutrons, 45.4 ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$.

RECORDS of geomagnetic disturbances during the seven sunspot cycles from 1884 to 1954 reveal a strong tendency for the initial disturbance of a 27-day recurrent series to occur near January or July. Final disturbances of such series show this tendency only weakly.

A SIGNIFICANT experiment is being conducted at Peoria, Illinois. Its purpose is to test out the program of the Committee for Economic Development. The CED is a privately financed, nonprofit organization, the purpose of which is to see that business provides high employment and operates at a high level of production after the war ends. It was organized last year by Paul G. Hoffman, President of the Studebaker Corporation.' This article will illustrate how the program is actually applied to business by describing how the CED operates in one community. The Peoria experiment is a fairly simple one, and the reactions are simple. Yet both the program and the reactions have considerable significance for the American economy and for the American business man. The experiment is a test of the willingness and ability of Peoria business men to make plans now to provide for high employment and production after the war. Although in a sense, the entire CED program is an experiment, the results of which cannot be fully determined until the war ends and the program has been called upon to prove itself, enough of the results are available to make a description of the Peoria part of the experiment worthwhile.

The High Altitude Observatory has completed installation at its Climax, Colorado, station of a coronagraph-spectrograph system especially designed for versatility in solar observations. The Lyot-type coronagraph is an f/20 refractor of 40.6-cm aperture, with a simple objective achromatized by a Mangin mirror on the principle originated by Schupmann. The equivalent focal length is 10.8 m. The Coude spectrograph is a stigmatic over-and-under f/26 reflecting system of 3.05-m focal length, with the grating at approximately the centers of curvature of the collimator and camera mirrors. Outputs are provided for a 50-cm by 35-mm film camera and two narrow-range auxiliary instruments in single pass, and for a magnetograph or other accessory in double-pass operation.

Five spicule film sequences taken on different dates in Ha were studied. Maximum heights of spicules ranged downward from 20,000 km. Lifetimes ranged from the film limit of 0� 3 min to about 30 min. Distributions of maximum heights and lifetimes indicated the occurrence of numerous small, short-lived spicules that were not resolved in these films.
