The article surveys the history of sport museums and halls of fame and discusses the ways they provide insight into the development and nature of contemporary sport, with special focus on the United States, where the sports hall of fame is a peculiar institution. America's sports heritage movement continues to flourish and show further signs of expansion. Commercialism and sponsorship, hero-worship and religion, amateurism and professionalism are but a few among the plethora of social phenomena and institutions involved in the heritage of sport. They will continue to reflect the place and values of sport in society in a unique manner.
