This article focuses on a case study that deals with an 18 year old mentally retarded girl with tyrosinaemia and tyrosyluria, probably existing since birth. She could not be classified as a patient with the hepatorenal syndrome nowadays called "Tyrosinosis." From this patient it was learned that p-hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid and its metabolites or an elevated serum tyrosine do not have a toxic effect on the normal renal tubules and liver. The possibility that these compounds have a toxic effect on the developing brain during prolonged exposure must be considered seriously. If this is true, tyrosinaemia, lasting longer than a few months, should be treated with a diet low in phenylalanine and tyrosine.
