There has been no general consensus as to basal metabolism rate(BMR)in tuberculous pleuropulmonary diseases although many reports on the subject have appeared in the medical literature. Furthermore, no extensive studies are availaÞle on BMR in patients with pleural diseases and in those receiving antituberculous chemotherapy. The author determined BMR in 225 cases of tuberculous pleuropulmonary diseases, all of whom except for a few cases with fibrothorax were under chemotherapy for various length of time in various combinations. The results revealed marked individual variations regardless of extent and type of the disease process. However, in the majority of cases BMR fell between 土 15%, and mean values in minimal and moderately advanced tuberculous and pleural diseases were found close to 0%. ln far advanced tuberculosis, on the contrary, mean value was +10.4% which is significantly higher than that of other groups of patients It was concluded that BMR is within normal range in most of cases with tuberculous pleuropulmonary diseases, but elevated values were more frequently found in far advanced pulmonary tuberculosis.
