The article offers information on organisms used as indicators of the limits of intertidal zones for shores of the British Isles. It is said that the upper limit of laminarians provides a boundary between the infralittoral fringe and the midlittoral zone. It is cited that on the majority of shores which lack laminarians, suitable alternative forms usually exist and can be used. The use of the upper limit of barnacles to indicate the upper limit of the midlittoral zone is hampered by differences in the vertical distribution of the two barnacles present in British Isles. It is mentioned that the pattern of high-level zonation is descibed from areas possessing Chthamalus or Balanus.
