INVESTIGATION AND RESEARCH FOR AN AUTOMATED, BUS UTILIZATION AND SCHEDULING SYSTEM WAS REPORTED. THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS SYSTEM WOULD INVOLVE (1) PROGRAM DESIGN AND COMPUTER SELECTION, (2) CODING OF THE SUPERVISOR PROGRAM AND RELATED PROGRAMS, (3) PROGRAM CHECKOUT, (4) DATA CONVERSION, (5) SYSTEM VERIFICATION, AND (6) FINAL DOCUMENTATION, INCLUDING DETAILED PROGRAM DOCUMENTS AND THE USER'S MANUAL PRESENTING SYSTEM CONCEPTS, MACHINE SPECIFICATIONS, AND OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES. A study was made of several dialects of the Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code (BASIC). The purpose was to determine if it was possible to identify a set of interactive BASIC dialects in which translatability between different members of the set would be high, if reasonable programing restrictions were imposed. It was first established that the four programing capabilities of: 1) computational ability and precision, 2) execution of a large-sized program, 3) accession to creation of external files, and 4) generation of formatted output were necessary if complex projects were to be undertaken. It was found that translation of most statements in BASIC was easily accomplished. Operands, relations, names, strings, arrays, functions, input and branching were among these. Difficulties were mainly encountered in file handling, chaining or subroutine calling, and output formatting. Detailed reports on the translatability of these elements have been compiled, a roster of 21 fundamental rules for translatability provided and three categories of dialects identified. These are: 1) BASIC dialects missing one critical element, 2) dialects lacking only formatted output capability, and 3) preferred dialects. Therefore, BASIC translatability is a fact and can be performed easily if a few rules are followed. (PB)

The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of color coding on reducing the time required to reach a criterion in a paired associate learning task. This study consisted of two experiments using bones which were color coded. Data were collected on four dependent variables: (1) number of trials required to reach a criterion of two correct trials on non-color-coded stimuli; (2) number of correct responses on a paper and pencil test on which all eight bones which S had learned were pointed out at one time; (3) the number of correct responses made by S when he was shown pictures of the bones and asked to respond with the color name associated with it; and (4) the number of correct responses made by S when he was shown a color and asked to respond with the name of a bone associated with it. It was concluded from the results of the two experiments that color coding, even when instructions alerting S to the color are added, was not beneficial in reducing the number of trials required to learn the type of material presented in this study. Linguistic criticism not only shows students the usefulness of grammar but also improves their comprehension of literature. For instance, a study of stress, pitch, and juncture in E. E. Cummings'"anyone lived in a pretty how town" adds meaning to the poem. Also helpful is an analysis of Cummings' tagmemic method of substitution slot-filling--use of verbs in noun slots and use of parallelism with the morpheme "by." An examination of D. H. Lawrence's short story, "The Blind Man," shows a contrast of grammatical patterns and literary moods between the second and fourth paragraphs. The conjunction "and" is used 10 times in the second paragraph to create a sense of the continuousness of joy. In contrast, "and" is used only twice in the fourth paragraph, but much embedding of kernel sentences that doubles back to emphasize, redefine, or modify reveals a sense of depression and regression. An analysis of the dialog in this story shows that Isabel's speech--replete with questions, negative morphemes, and the conjunction "but"--indicates her hesitation, indecision, and insecurity. Similarly, the speeches of Maurice and Bertie, showing constant use of the question transform, reveal their insecurity. This linguistic analysis, therefore, makes students more aware of the fusion of form and meaning, and points out the integral part that language plays in their lives. (JS)
