Abstract

THE EARLIEST STAGE OF IMPLANTATION of arterial vascular prostheses, in the order of seconds or minutes, may be crucial in determining the postoperative course, though months are required for complete healing. The precise conditions of the prostheses immediately after implantation, however, still remain to be investigated. We have microscopically studied the course of healing of vascular prostheses implanted in the artery of dogs. Observation was begun immediately after implantation and continued for a period of 1 m. This paper presents our observations up to 24 hr postoperative, and also states coagulability of the blood during the first IO min after implantation.
