Effect of various aliphatic hydrocarbons on the cis-1.4 polymerization of butadiene with nickel naphthenate/boron trifluoride etherate/triethylaluminum catalyst was investigated. It was observed that vinylcyclohexene, allenes, and acetylenes retarded the initiation and the propagation and enhanced the chain transfer. The retarding effect is stronger in the order: paraffin, monoolefin < vinylcyclohexene ≦ acetylene < allene = butadiene-1.2 < methylacetylene < vinylacetylene. The microstructure of the polymer is not affected by the presence of these compounds. The retarding effect was discussed in terms of the coordination of the unsaturated hydrocarbons to the catalyst.
