6. A note on the unsteady cavity flow in a tunnel

Abstract

The unsteady internal cavitating flow such as the one observed in a pump or a turbine is studied for a simple two-dimensional model of a base-cavitating wedge in an infinite tunnel and it is shown how the cavitation compliance can be calculated using the linearized free streamline theory. Numerical values are obtained for the limiting case of a free jet. Two important features are: First, the cavitation compliance is found to be of complex form, having additional resistive and reactive terms beyond the purely inertial oscillation of the whole channel in 'slug flow.' Second, the compliance has a strong dependence on frequency.

Abstract

Brief accounts of the theoretical research conducted on the unsteady cavitation characteristics of liquid rocket engine turbopumps are reported. The objective is to produce estimates of the cavitation compliance and other unsteady characteristics which could then be used in analysis of the pogo instability. Blade cavitation is the particular pheonomenon which is investigated and line arized free streamline methods were employed in both quasistatic and complete dynamic cascade analyses of the unsteady flow. The simpler quasistatic analysis was applied to particular turbopumps but yielded values of compliances significantly smaller than those indirectly obtained from experiments. Reasons for this discrepancy are discussed. The complete dynamic analysis presents a new problem in fundamental hydrodynamics and, though the basic solution is presented, numerical results have not as yet been obtained.

15. Modification of Radiation Response in Synchronized HeLa Cells by Metabolic Inhibitors

Abstract

Treatment of irradiated HeLa cells by puromycin aminonucleoside (PAN), an inhibitor of ribosomal RNA-synthesis, markedly reduces colony-forming ability. Post-irradiation treatment by PAN in the mitotically synchronized cells shows that the highest potentiating effect of PAN is observed at the end of the S phase, normally the most radioresistant part of the cell cycle, and least effective during G-2 and G-1 phases, in that order.Based on the known mechanism of action of this drug, the possible role of certain metabolic events in radiation response of living cells is discussed.

16. Studies on Hypoxia. VII. Effect of Prenatal Anoxia on Leucine-3H Incorporation of Neonatal Rat Pancreas and Submandibular Gland1

Abstract

A radioautographic study has been made of the effect of prenatal exposure of rats to anoxia on leucine-3H incorporation by the pancreas and submandibular gland. Pregnant rats were subjected to anoxia on day 12, 15, or 18 of gestation period. On delivery the offsprings were given an injection of leucine-3H and sacrificed at 15, 60, or 120 min later. Pieces of the pancreas and submandibular gland were double-embedded, sectioned, and prepared for radioautography in a routine manner. Silver grains were counted over exocrine cells and compared with grain numbers obtained from appropriate control. Results indicate the following: (i) The incorporation of leucine-,3H in control rats goes on at a greater rate in the pancreas than in the submandibular gland. (ii) The submandibular gland is the more profoundly affected of the two, despite the higher rate of leucine-3H incorporation in the pancreas, (iii) In both organs there is a protracted suppression of leucine-3H incorporation which supports previous histologic data.

Abstract

Antigenic modulation (the loss of TL antigens from TL+ cells exposed to TL antibody in the absence of lytic complement) has been demonstrated in vitro. An ascites leukemia, phenotype TL.1,2,3, which modulates rapidly and completely when incubated with TL antiserum in vitro, was selected for further study of the phenomenon. Over a wide range of TL antibody concentrations modulation at 37 degrees C was detectable within 10 min and was complete within approximately 1 hr. The cells were initially sensitized to C' by their contact with antibody, thereafter losing this sensitivity to C' lysis together with their sensitivity to TL antibody and C' in the cytotoxic test. The capacity of the cells to undergo modulation was abolished by actinomycin D and by iodoacetamide, and by reducing the temperature of incubation to 0 degrees C. Thus modulation apparently is an active cellular process. Antigens TL. 1,2, and 3 are all modulated by anti-TL.1,3 serum and by anti-TL.3 serum. This modulation affects all three TL components together, even when antibody to one or two of them is lacking. aAnti-TL.2 serum does not induce modulation and in fact impairs modulation by the other TL antibodies. The influence of the TL phenotype of cells upon the demonstrable content of H-2 (D region) isoantigen, first shown in cells modulated in vivo, has been observed with cells modulated in vitro. Cells undergoing modulation show a progressive increase in H-2 (D region) antigen over a period of 4 hr, with no change in H-2 antigens of the K region. Restoration of the TL+ phenotype of modulated cells after removal of antibody is less rapid than TL+ --> TL- modulation and may require several cell divisions.
