Theoretical models for the calculation of the radiative effects of atmospheric aerosols require the inference of such parameters as optical depth, the complex index of refraction and the equivalent size distribution. A polarimeter and a multispectral radiometer are used for local monitoring of aerosols via ground stations, or global monitoring via spacecraft occultation experiments. It is shown that measurements of optical depth at one wavelength as has been the custom, are insufficient to provide useful information for meteorological calculations, and new experiments and instruments must be devised to take advantage of new theoretical developments.

Attempts made to establish the viability of the polarimeter as a ground based remote probe of atmospheric aerosols under varying meteorological conditions are reported. Extension radiometer data are also given and a comparison was made with polarimeter data to determine if one could complement/supplement the other. The analyses show that the two instruments are complementary devices and any information obtained from one will greatly facilitate the analysis of the other. Detailed results are given in graphical form.

This paper describes the theoretical analysis that is required to infer, from polarimeter measurements of skylight, the size distribution, refractive index and abundance of particulates in the atmosphere. To illustrate the viability of the method, some data obtained at UCLA is analyzed and the atmospheric parameters are derived. The explicit demonstration of the redundancy in the description of aerosol distributions suggests that radiation field measurements will not uniquely determine the modal radius of the size distribution. In spite of this nonuniqueness information useful to heat budget calculations can be derived.

An analytic formula is derived which describes approximately the scattering of electromagnetic waves in a haze. This formula is compared, and found to agree well, with the exact results from Mie theory that are available in the literature. The formula is used to arrive at a simple, nonredundant, but complete parametrization of the aerosol model.

Approaches for solving multiple scattering problems in planetary atmospheres are considered along with the solution of the radiative transfer theory problems by the Monte Carlo method, the radiative transfer of visible radiation in turbid atmospheres, aspects of scattering and absorption from poly-dispersed aerosols, and multiple scattering in cloud layers. Other subjects discussed include particulate sizes from polarization measurements, lidar observations of atmospheric particulate content, methods of calculating infrared transfer, molecular absorption parameters in atmospheric modelling, and infrared remote sounding. The influence of the atmosphere on spectral radiance and contrasts of natural formations measured from space is investigated and analytical results for radiative transfer in thick atmospheres are presented. Individual items are announced in this issue.

An experiment with a ground-based polarimeter is described. It is shown that the optical properties of particles in the atmosphere can be inferred on the basis of the measured data of the radiation field. The results of the investigation demonstrate that the turbid atmosphere can be continually monitored with the aid of remote measurements of polarization and intensity.

Various articles are presented on multiple scattering problems and radiative transfer in the atmosphere. Particle size distribution and molecular absorption are also discussed.
